Should the voting age go down to 16?

Polls

9th November 2018

Today (Friday) the House of Commons debates whether younger people should be able to vote. Youth Parliament MP Khadeejah Hullemuth wrote us this to explain…

THE UK Youth Parliament is made up of around 300 members from all across the country: Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

These individuals represent the voice of young people in their borough, working with youth councils, youth groups and other networks to try to make a change. As part of this, every year there is a national Make Your Mark ballot, where young people have the chance to vote on which of ten issues they feel is most important to them. For the past five years, young people have voted for lowering the voting age to 16, instead of 18, which is what it currently is.

We argue that by age 16, you can legally have a baby, serve in the army, and make decisions that will shape the rest of your life. If we are allowed to have all these rights and freedoms, and if we pay tax, then surely it is only natural that this extends to our right to have a stake in the future we play a massive part in. Policies voted on by the Government are going to be those that most affect the younger generation, so why should we not be able to have a say? Campaigners have fought and are fighting.

In 2013, Scotland amended their voting age, and lowered it to 16 for the Scottish referendum. This was monumental for the movement, as 16-year-olds across the country of Scotland could have their say. Not only did this cause masses of young people to go to the polling station, but it saw the most representative electorate it has seen, arguably, in the country’s history. The battle isn’t over. In December 2017, the Member of Parliament for Oldham, Jim McMahon, brought it to Parliament, yet this debate was postponed.

Despite this, the UK Youth Parliament continues to campaign, and it made Votes at 16 its national campaign twice in a row.

This year, it’s back in the House of Commons today (9 November), to show the country, Government and people that young citizens deserve to be represented in their country and to have a say in their future.

As our MPs debate – we want you to debate too! Let us know what you think by voting, and commenting why below!

Should the voting age go down to 16?

Yes because, 18 and over is an adult and I think younger people should have the right to vote. When it's people who are 18 and over they have different opinions to people who are 16 and over. This allows younger people to have the right to vote. It will be interesting to, see what people who are 16 and 17 have to say about the vote.

88unicorn · 5 years ago

I think we should because we make so manny decisions at 16 and voting should be one of them because young people should have a say and not be ignored and classed like a child.

natalija · 5 years ago

Sometimes people at 16 don't really understand all the negatives/positives in a certain vote so I don't think the age should go down.

marla_cat · 5 years ago

Yes, because its their future and if they have to wait two more years to vote then big things could already have changed. This is good because then young people have their opinions heard

dotbaker · 5 years ago

Yes, because the voting is going to affect young people most

ms12345 · 5 years ago

Yes because everyone should have the right to vote in my opinion

ms12345 · 5 years ago

even what age they are

chahou · 5 years ago

Much as some people are mature and able to think sensibly at the age of sixteen, a large majority don't read the news and wouldn't vote responsibly. To solve this, there could be a test you took at 16 and if you passed (it would be based on politics) you could vote and otherwise you would vote at 18.

raven7i · 5 years ago

MAYBE: I think that 16 is a good age to vote, as you can do many other things at 16. But some 16 year olds are not as mature as others, so maybe the youngest age to vote should be 17.

raven7i · 5 years ago

Because it is in the middle.

ayoota · 5 years ago

I think yes because if you are allowed in the Navy and the Army you should be allowed to vote .

frog3001 · 5 years ago

16 because we young people should have a chance

agentlord · 5 years ago

I think you should be able to do it because then you can get used to it and stuff like that

elephant_m · 5 years ago

Young people usually make bad mistakes and when you vote, there is no chance of changing your answer.

dancemunch · 5 years ago

Yes, because the younger generation is much more intelligent then adults think and we should have as much of a say as they do

dcfan · 5 years ago

Some 16 year olds are well informed, they should have the right to a say on how England is run.

ravenclaw1 · 5 years ago

I think yes because they should have a right to have their say and 16 and 17 year olds can understand what they are voting for as they are old enough to do so. If you are 16 or over, you can make your own decisions for the rest of your life, but you can get help from friends or family.

astro_girl · 5 years ago

I think that it should go down as it's their future that is being voted about

acegirl20 · 5 years ago

Yes, the voting age should be lowered to 16 since many of the polls that adults have voted for recently have effected children's futures and it is only fair that at least some of us get to vote for our own futures. Yet if this were to happen then the younger generation of students would need to be educated clearly on politics and the effects of their voting.

dachshund7 · 5 years ago

I think it should as it’s our future not elderly peoples as we will live longer and any results will affect us more than them.

hermione9 · 5 years ago

No!Some 16 year olds are silly and too young. My cousin is 15 and definitely not going to be ready to vote in one year.

hermione9 · 5 years ago

Cool

hermione9 · 5 years ago

10th to comment!

oceangirl · 5 years ago

It will affect them most, it will affect us most. So, I went yes.

pony · 5 years ago

We should have a say but at a young age we do not no much about politics and could make the wrong desions.

gingetoff · 5 years ago

I think that the young generation should have the opportunity to give their opinion because this is the world that we are going to grow up in. This is our future and if we have to wait 2 years lots of big things could change. Don’t each generation have different roles to play and different things to say and believe in

sao · 5 years ago

I think 16 and 17 year olds should be able to vote because they have younger minds and they may possible have a different perspective. Voting is for changes for everyone, so everybody should be heard about their thoughts.

kat · 5 years ago

No, I don't think that the voting age should go down because I just don't think you are old enough to make that decision when you are 16 or 17

whyno2008 · 5 years ago

i think 16 and 17 year old people shouldn't vote because they aren't an adult technically

uglypigeon · 5 years ago

Yes, because some people pay tax at age 16, so therefore, in my opinion they are an adult and should have the right to vote.

emzdude · 5 years ago

NO! I don't think the voting age should go down to 16 because people aged 16 don't always see the bigger picture.

oceanwaves · 5 years ago

It is our future that they are voting for. We should get a say in what we want, too. We should decide - we need a say in our future.

reader985 · 5 years ago

If you can get married, have a job, live alone and pay taxes, you should have a right to vote on your government- the people who make laws affecting you. And ultimately it's your future you should be able to decide on.

crazyfish6 · 5 years ago

Now, I have to admit that although I am a 'yes' supporter, I am still at a split decision. I have my own idea as to what should happen. I think there should be 2 separate ballots for the same vote, that way the results from each con both be managed in different ways. I suppose my only fear with this going ahead is that a lot of people don't even know what Brexit or The General Election is...

izzy_xxxxx · 5 years ago

I can't wait to be able to vote. People say we can't understand the way the world works, but I'm only 13 and my class know more than most adults. At 16, you can pay taxes, join the army and have a baby.. why not vote?

purplecat2 · 5 years ago

Yes because young people have the right to vote.

ch28 · 5 years ago

I think it should go down to 16 because it is our life we our going to live

jesusrules · 5 years ago

I do not think that 16 year olds should be able to vote, because sometimes teenagers sometimes don't make a rational decision. plus, you are not as wise as older people and probably don't think of the effects as thoroughly as other people. the parliament should listen to the younger people's ideas but i don't think sixteens should have the last say.

habbot07 · 5 years ago

They definitely should let 16 year Olds and over because 18s are classed as an adult and everyone under that age are classed as kids.

nickmoo17 · 5 years ago

No, because people who are younger than eighteen might not know what they are voting for and effect other peoples lives who are older than them

xdaisy · 5 years ago

I think young people should be able to vote because we can make many important decisions that can change our lives forever at 16 but we can't vote. I also think another good idea would be that we can only vote if we pay taxes.

daisy101 · 5 years ago

I don't think you should vote at 16 because not all 16 year old's are responsible and that could cause serious changes in the way the country is run and it will affect people in a way they did not expect.

booklover5 · 5 years ago

We should be able to vote on our generation's future. Those who don't want to vote don't have to, but those who do can have a voice in our country's state of affairs.

booklover5 · 5 years ago

We should be able to vote on our generation's future. Those who don't want to vote don't have to, but those who do can have a voice in our country's state of affairs.

comeon · 5 years ago

I think that the voting age should be lowered to 16 as if you can make other life-shaping decisions at 16, why shouldn't you have your say in a decision that could change your life?

anjakf · 5 years ago

It's a very good idea because the younger people are the ones who are going to be affected most by the decisions made

hockey.xx · 5 years ago

No I don’t think so because if we had sixteen year olds and seventeen year olds voting things maybe voted for because they think they are being silly and not thinking and most things have got the age limit of eighteen which keeps it simple

wolfpup123 · 5 years ago

I think the voting age should go down to 16, because it gives younger people a chance to make very important decisions. This would mean that young people's decisions and opinions are included and would go into deciding who should run the country.

peetree17 · 5 years ago

Yes! If you are old enough to join the army, you should be able to vote!

emyhuffle · 5 years ago

If i wasn't being bias. No, i think 16 or over would not be ok to vote as you mature as you grow. This means that they may regret their decision. Moreover, they might want to "fit in with the crowd" and change there mind because of their peers.

tennis08 · 5 years ago

Because some 16 year olds will not understand the issues involved.

greenpanda · 5 years ago

I think yes, because if people are mature and sensible enough then they should be able to vote at a younger age. Also, people can get married and have children at 16, so they should be able to vote aswell.

chealsea · 5 years ago

I don't think they should as they might not know enough about what they are voting for or there parents might not agree anyway

lolteen23 · 5 years ago

Yes! It will give the younger generation a much needed voice, especially with Brexit just around the corner. Its their future and once they get to 18 the things they wanted to change at 16 could of happened or not happened. The age should go down.

dotty08 · 5 years ago

no because not all of us are mentally old enough to vote and might not understand what we are voting for.

dotty08 · 5 years ago

No, because not all of us are mentally old enough and could make a bad decision.

acegirl20 · 5 years ago

I think it should be lowered to sixteen since many polls recently have effected younger generations and therefore it would mean that at least some of the youngest generation would get a vote. Young people also have a different perspective of the world from adults and so that could even affect how the votes for each party or choice come out. However if this were to happen children would need to be educated clearly on politics and the effects of their choices.

dwfangirl · 5 years ago

When you are 16, you are old enough to make your own decisions, and 18+ is an adult. Younger people should be able to vote. Even of it isn't lowered to 16, they should at least lower it to 17. this is why I say yes. @DWFangirl

xxowlxx · 5 years ago

16-17 year olds still aren’t adults, but if they can legally be sent away to fight in wars, take care of a baby and pay taxes, then why shouldn’t they get a say in national referendums?

jp11_2006 · 5 years ago

NO because in teenage years people aren't always as mature so it can sway the result unfairly due to them voting for the wrong thing. It would be better if they raised the age (say to 25) to give the outcome a more sensible result.

poppypapa · 5 years ago

Yes, because younger people should be able to vote.

emojiface · 5 years ago

I don't think it should because they are still in school and are still young and a bit silly.

molly67 · 5 years ago

No becuase mabye some people wont be mature enough at 16 and then change society forever, and mabye lead to a not so good leader.

sophie.w · 5 years ago

no because younger people might not understand all the things they're voting for

olyduro · 5 years ago

i think we shouldn't because 16 year olds aren't very responsible

parvati · 5 years ago

yes, because it gives younger people a chance to think about the big vote.It also allows the votes to go higher for who becomes who and what becomes what!!

xx_puppys · 5 years ago

Yes, also as I am doing a formal debate to push the government to do this alongside Brexit. I believe that people of the younger generation have a big impact on the future so in conclusion 16 year olds should get the vote.

abinews · 5 years ago

I think 16 year olds should be alowed to vote but only for certain things like brexit but that for the elections they should wait as a lot of us might not have a clear idea about politics yet.

j100p · 5 years ago

I think 16 year olds should be allowed to vote, as when you become 16, you are given lots of responsibilities, such as getting your driving licence, or pay tax.

jamesy10 · 5 years ago

Damn yes! Why, if we are allowed to have children, have to pay them taxes... and can join the army then why, just why are we unalloyed to vote?

ch28 · 5 years ago

I don’t think we should vote yet but I think we should have a say not just get ignored.

joshlapp07 · 5 years ago

Yes,as giving younger people a chance to vote makes them think that they are a part of this world.

Magic10 · 5 years ago

At 16, we can join the army and die for a government we weren’t allowed to vote for. How stupid is that?

seaparrot · 5 years ago

It would give them a responsibility and make them feel important.

shpee · 5 years ago

Yes, because I would much rather we ruin the country for ourselves instead of old people doing it then leaving us to clean up the mess. So, really, it'd probably be better. Plus it would mean I'm able to vote in the next general election (unless one is called early again) so that's nice.

rockstar13 · 5 years ago

I definitely agree with you Bobalob as children should be able to get their voice heard and they should have the right to vote. This will also affect our society in a good way as more voices will be heard and youths can get involved.

tinyrolo · 5 years ago

Yes because it would give more people more opportunities and I feel younger people will be around to suffer climate change so we should let them determine their future.

7diamond07 · 5 years ago

I think we should lower the voting age because it is their future.

isabelles8 · 5 years ago

No because the majority of people are sensible enough to cast a vote, but a few people would just go with the same choice as their friends.

scrooge383 · 5 years ago

wot gong on u play fortnite i do i so pro

jabberjay · 5 years ago

16's should have the right to not! #GOLABOURPARTY

jabberjay · 5 years ago

*right to vote

izzyleaf · 5 years ago

Yes, this means that a wider variety of different peoples ideas will get heard. 16 year olds are sensible enough to valet for who they think should be in charge

bruh12345 · 5 years ago

People who are aged 16 understand the news and know what is happening around the world and what the polls are about.

aoifeh · 5 years ago

more people can vote.

fly · 5 years ago

I am not sure because to vote you need to be responsible as your vote could change Britain. Some 16 year olds are definitely responsible enough, but on the other hand some aren’t
I think voting should be open 16 year olds but I think till they are 18 their parents should give their consent

22well · 5 years ago

I think “Fly” is right and I think they should be able to vote because they can have a baby and get married

john28 · 5 years ago

No. 16 year olds are not as capable as 18 year olds.

epicvader · 5 years ago

Yes, think they should, as almost all 16 year olds want to vote, and on many occasions, like brexit, the subject will be voted on, and then 2 years later, the subject is still not solved, but they are now 18, but they didn’t get a say in their future.

avaturner · 5 years ago

No, because 16 is still a teen and not a mature 18 and over adult . Some 16 year olds just do things for f.u.n
but 18 year olds are very wise they think of answers that takes them a long time to think so my OPINION is no.

toffeeguy · 5 years ago

ITS COOL TO

lamb14 · 5 years ago

It's our future so YES.

lottielove · 5 years ago

I think yes because I think more people should have a right to vote but I don't think they should bring the age down too much because if it get's TOO low people might not really understand what they are voting for and be stupid and vote for something stupid.

lottielove · 5 years ago

I think more people should have an opportunity to vote too.

gina · 4 years ago

TOTALLY

redrubyguy · 4 years ago

No, that is far too young. I will be 16 in but a few months time, and there are many people my age who are nowhere near prepared to make a decision as significant as voting. Only taxpayers should be allowed to vote.

6626fj5 · 4 years ago

At 16, you are still very impressionable by your parents decisions and ideologies. I don't speak for all 16 year olds, however the vast majority will not do masses of research into a topic they don't fully understand before taking it to the vote. I trust myself to be able to vote at this age, and many others, but it would be irresponsible to allow all 16 year olds to vote

katkid10 · 4 years ago

Younger people have more common sense because they would want to help the environment.

p-unicorn · 4 years ago

our young opinions should be heard

tradcath · 3 years ago

No, and I'm saying this as a 16-year-old too. Plus I'm the 100th comment so yay!
