Do you think the silent corridor rule is a good idea?

A SECONDARY school in Birmingham is introducing a new silent corridor rule.

From 5 November, pupils at Ninestiles in Acocks Green must be silent at all times while moving between classes. This will include going to and from assembly. If anyone breaks the rule, they will be given a 20-minute detention.

The acting head teachers of the school, Alex Hughes and Andrea Stephens, sent out a letter to parents that said they hoped the rule would “ensure students arrive calmly and ready to learn.” Pupils are allowed to socialise at break and lunch once they are in a communal area, but have to leave school in silence at the end of the day.

What do you think?

Do you think the silent corridor rule is a good idea?

I think that it is not a good idea to have a silent corridor because between classes is a way for kids to check things like what homework they have and what lesson is next.

trackdemon · 5 years ago

No because you might wanna have a chance to see your friends ? and have a chat.

reader9000 · 5 years ago

I don't think there should be a talking ban because you work well when you are happy, and talking makes people happy.
Also if there is a ban then you will only be able to talk at break time and lunchtime. When you talk, you express yourself, and I think everyone should be able to do this!

mcgeorge1 · 5 years ago

I think no, teachers don't want kids to yell but silence most of the day could lead up to loneliness and making friends is a huge part education.

60creator · 5 years ago

No, people shouldn’t need to be quiet in corridors because that would make people more chatty in class and it just isn’t fair

hh-26068 · 5 years ago

No!!! I don't think that this is a good idea because I know someone who is at that school and they say it feels very eerie when nobody's talking and the only things you can hear are feet shuffling on the floor.

jakedogo · 5 years ago

I don't think it's a good idea because you might have just finished a lesson and want to catch up with your friends. If there is a silent corridor rule then it will be much harder for people to communicate

chahou · 5 years ago

What would happen if you got lost or were new to the school? Plus, it is the only time you can talk to people and what about being polite or someone saying thankyou.

owly · 5 years ago

No, because when walking around the school, you feel comfortable. Also, you can discuss things about the previous lesson, and tell each other facts about the class.

cozmojjss@ · 5 years ago

No I love tallking in the coriador plus i'ts teachers job to makeing sure you are not to loud

poppypapa · 5 years ago

I think it is a great idea because it may disturb others in the classroom.

lcrabtre · 5 years ago

I think that it is stopping children comunicating when the should be.

uglypigeon · 5 years ago

No, I think it is not a good idea as pupils will probably end up getting detions a lot, as they won’t be able to follow the rule. Furthermore, if they aren’t able to chat in the corridor they will just chat in class.

natalija · 5 years ago

I think that this method is a good idea for discipline and for not disturbing other classes. However, it is a little harsh on students, that they receive a whole 20-minute detention.

sambrophy · 5 years ago

I think it is good to have a silent corridor because it lets the children in lessons concentrate more easily.

unicorn970 · 5 years ago

I think it’s unfair that they have to be quiet in corridors because the students have their freedom to talk. Also talking with your friends makes you happy so not being able to talk might make them unhappy. ?

anahi77 · 5 years ago

I think it is a not so good idea because you might want to heck with your friends what you're next lesson is, and also, it's good to socialize with other kids and make new friends. if you get lost, in a silent school you wont be able to ask anyone for help.

moph · 5 years ago

We might need to ask a friend about classes or homework or have a conversation with them.

lolteen23 · 5 years ago

No! I don't think the 'Silent Corridor' rule is good because although the headmasters and staff say that it will make pupils ready for learning, it may put them off, as they may talk about lessons and learning anyway.

amepower17 · 5 years ago

I think that corridors should not be silent is because if people with mental health disorders can not understand the rules of being silent they might get into trouble for speaking

greenpanda · 5 years ago

No, because pupils should be allowed to socialise and chat with their friends, and 20 minutes of detention is quite harsh for having a quick chat!

news15 · 5 years ago

No this is not a good idea because children and teenagers need time to socialise other than break and lunch as their friends may not be on the same lunch and between classes is the only chance they get to see each other. Also, you have to sit in silence during classes and many people may end up disliking school because of this restriction.

feverdt · 5 years ago

I don't think this is a good idea as when you go into work you need to be able to communicate with fellow colleagues

3629 · 5 years ago

I think it is not a good idea because it wouldn't be a nice atmosphere to be in and 8t would make the school seem more like a prison.

melon_cow7 · 5 years ago

No because, especially in secondary school some friends you don’t see anywhere but school so it’s a bad idea cause you wanna can’t with them...

rosrio · 5 years ago

i think that it is a good idea because it will help autistic peoplefeel more comfortable
:-)

rosrio · 5 years ago

even though the "20 minute detention" is way too harsh

Tikkup · 5 years ago

I think it is definitely wrong to ban talking because humans are supposed to communicate. What would happen if you got lost and didn’t know where to go for your next lesson? I can see why you would think it’s ok, but no.

krabbit38 · 5 years ago

5th of November is bonfire night and my bff’S birthday

krabbit38 · 5 years ago

I agree with rosrio

ciarza123 · 5 years ago

No because people need to talk before the lessons if not they will be fussy and chatty during lesson time.

mrmilo · 5 years ago

I don't think the silent corridor is a good idea because the children might want to have a chat with their friends to say hi but then you have to be silent down the corridor and go straight to class then you start to work. I also think they should have a chance to tell all their friend and other pupils something great they have done or if something has happened to them that they want to tell their friends about privately so they feel like they can concentrate because once I couldn't concentrate because of something that happened to me but when it was sorted out it felt fine.

pusheen_9 · 5 years ago

I think that even though we want to chat we should be disciplined not to and organise ourselves.

mimpi123 · 5 years ago

I don't think its a good idea because what if you are lost and need to ask someone where to go.Also there would be teachers to ensure that silence is kept so if someone talked they would shout breaking the silence.

dachshund7 · 5 years ago

I think this is not a good idea because if a new student arrives and don’t know for instance where there lesson is, they would have no way to find out!

moojingles · 5 years ago

I get what they are trying to do, but I think that they should be made to stand silently outside class but allowed to talk when walking between them.

turkey2006 · 5 years ago

I think that it is a good idea to have a silent corridor so that children can concentrate the lesson that they are on.

hagrid · 5 years ago

That idea is so mean to the kids plus they will probably get loads of letters from parents complaining about the rule. I'm glad that's not my school.

dcfan · 5 years ago

Yes , it will make autistic people feel more comfortable in the school environment. I think all secondary schools should have this rule.

dcfan · 5 years ago

I put what I said since I'm autistic.

dcfan · 5 years ago

The only exception is if people get lost.

hagrid · 5 years ago

I'm sorry dcfan, I just don't see where your coming from.

jp11_2006 · 5 years ago

Absolutely not. Education may be important but friends and mental health completely overrules that.

crazyfish6 · 5 years ago

I do not agree with this because I believe it is not healthy for children to be deprived of socialisation, even during school.

tc-764350 · 5 years ago

no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it doesn't let children socialize with other kids

herbology · 5 years ago

It's not a good idea as people might wanna have a chat about how they found their last lesson. More likely to be talking about something random. Oh well?

bugster@sm · 5 years ago

Do not agree! Socialising is important for people who are shy or have a disability.

elephant_m · 5 years ago

I know how noisy it is in a school corridor and this 'silent' rule is great because it will be a much calmer way to go around the school.

molly67 · 5 years ago

I think itis not a good idea because between lessons it is a chance for pupils to chat with each other and not in the lesson.

person_099 · 5 years ago

Wouldn't banning talking in the corridors make them more chatty in class? Also what if a year seven needed directions? I've been in that position and if I couldn't talk to people in the corridors, I would be late for so many lessons. This just increases problems. Think! Please!

agentlord · 5 years ago

No because then you might wanna have a chat with ya friends

sacagawea_ · 5 years ago

I think that it isn’t a good idea to not let people talk in the corridor, because if you had lost your timetable and you knew your friend had the same lesson as you, you wouldn’t be able to ask them therefore being late for class (if you even show up, how would you if you couldn’t ask?) and getting a detention. I think that even if this school had had the loudest corridors ever, it is over the top to ban speaking. If you had a friend who had other friends that you did not get on with that he/ she hung out with at break and lunch, the only time you may be able to talk to them is between classes. I think that the children’s happiness should be put first and if I was headmaster if this school I would have a school vote, so that I knew the majority of people was happy with the choice

oceangirl · 5 years ago

I think that it would be a good idea, as it would help students calm down.

bunnylb · 5 years ago

I think that you should be able to talk in corridors because then it gives you a chance to socialise with your friends.

jesusrules · 5 years ago

i think that there is break time to have a chat, and people should concentrate on getting to their next lesson, they should focus on school, they can chat at break and see each other after school, but you can't learn if you are chatting to your firends, you distract other people as well.

uniquepika · 5 years ago

This is not a good idea because children need to socialise and communicate. At this school the children will not be prepares for a good social life!

emojiface · 5 years ago

I'm not sure about idea because if they're new and don't know where to go they might want to ask a friend or someone a year above but I do get that teachers need to work and are tired of telling pupils off.

jamesy10 · 5 years ago

Why would you do that as if they are ‘befriending’ then why come along and say YOU SHALL NOT SPEAK.
#iamzegandalf

xxowlxx · 5 years ago

They might need to ask their friends for things.

thatguy25 · 5 years ago

I think it's a bad idea as quite a lot of socialising is done in the hallways and it would cut down the amount of time students actually interact with people in real life.

ewb26 · 5 years ago

I don't think that having a silent corridor is a good idea, because I personally think that if someone bumped into in the corridor they might say sorry, then if a teacher saw they could then wrongly accuse them of chatting.

rockstar13 · 5 years ago

I completely disagree with all of you as we will then get distracted by the rowdy noises of people blabbering about outside in the corridor if we are in class.

redsetter0 · 5 years ago

No, because you can't have a quick chat.

redsetter0 · 5 years ago

No, because you can't have a quick chat.

ronhamster · 5 years ago

no definitely not because if you had a silent corridor in your school it would not be fun atall and if you had to have a silent corridor you would have the teachers would need to speak to you the teachers will be breaking the rules .
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sparrow223 · 5 years ago

No, because corridors are like a mini brake from lessons and if you are lost or don't know where to go, you can't ask someone without getting into trouble.

kitten888 · 5 years ago

No, as the corridors and lunch and breaks are the only times you can speak, and it would make people MORE chatty during class.

kitten888 · 5 years ago

No, as the corridors and lunch and breaks are the only times you can speak, and it would make people MORE chatty during class.

aoifeh · 5 years ago

yes because it will not let kids concentrate and they will get bad exam marks.

john28 · 5 years ago

No, because pupils should have a right to talk.

epicvader · 5 years ago

Noooo!!!!
It will mean that students have a horribly time at school, and they can still not cause a nuisance even when they are talking

splaggle · 5 years ago

Cuz it so boring with out talking in halls

lottielove · 5 years ago

I think that there should not be a rule where children have to be silent in the corridor because they might need to check what lesson is next and ask their friend(s). Also if children are happy they work a lot better and they would be much happier if they could have a little chat with their friends while walking to the next lesson. But I do think there should be a rule of no running in the corridor and that you should always walk on the left/right because then it is a LOT easier to get around.

trudie · 4 years ago

As long as the kids aren't to noisy it's ok cause people might be working there
