The Government’s Online Safety Act, which is designed to protect children online, has become law.

It means that social media companies and websites face huge fines of £18 million or more, and their bosses could even go to jail, if they fail to protect you from harmful content on their platforms.

Under the law, some websites now have to check users’ ages, and social media platforms must quickly remove posts of illegal content, like animal cruelty or self-harm.

The UK Safer Internet Centre says ‘harmful content’ is anything that causes a person distress or harm. It includes rude or graphic images, nasty comments or hate speech.
