COULD gaming be bad for you? The World Health Organization thinks so and has come up with a new health risk, called gaming disorder.
The disorder is described in a similar way to an addiction. It includes behaviour such as a weak control over gaming, increasingly putting gaming before other daily activities and interests, and continuing gaming even when there are negative consequences.
A person can be diagnosed with a gaming disorder if their behaviour is bad enough that it’s affecting their personal life, family and education or occupation. It will normally be evident for at least 12 months.
The disorder has been added to a draft of the 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases. This is like a big database where health trends, conditions and statistics are recorded.
Gamers shouldn’t worry too much, as studies show that the disorder only affects a tiny number of people who take part in digital or videogaming activities. However, the World Health Organization suggests that those who like gaming should make sure they are aware of how long they spend playing and the effects it can have.
