Meet the Lusius malfoyi wasp – a New Zealand insect named after a Harry Potter character!

News

TOM Saunders is a Harry Potter fan and entomologist (a scientist who studies insects), and he’s just named a wasp after one of the characters.

He’s aiming to change how people feel about wasps, as lots of people think that they’re ALL pests, who just love to sting.

“If you look at the diversity of wasps around the world you’ll find only a tiny fraction, less than 1% are pests and problems!”

That’s why he’s named a newly discovered New Zealand wasp ‘Lusius malfoyi’ after the Harry Potter character Lucius Malfoy.

Wasp redemption

SPOILER ALERT FOR HARRY POTTER HERE!

Throughout the magical series, the Lucius Malfoy is always a slimy villain, plotting against Potter and his friends with the Dark Lord, Voldemort.

But in the final book of the series, Lucius abandons Voldemort, and later helps bring the Dark Lord’s other supporters to justice – somewhat redeeming himself.

The pale, Lusius malfoyi wasp does not sting and is no problem to humans. We wonder how Draco feels…
