Nearly two tons of confiscated ivory crushed in New York City’s Central Park

TWO tons (that’s the weight of a large walrus!) of illegal ivory were destroyed in a rock crusher in New York City’s Central Park last week (3 August).

John Calvelli, WCS Executive Vice President for Public Affairs and Director of WCS’s 96 Elephants campaign said: “Today is a great day for elephants and a really bad day for ivory traffickers.”

Tens of thousands of elephants are killed every year by poachers after their ivory tusks. For hundreds of years, ivory has been used to make things like jewelrrey and piano keys – it is very expensive. In 1990 it became illegal to sell ivory across the world, but a black market still exists…

This crush is a statement to the world…
