Yang Boya is one of the ten finalists in with a chance of winning the Global Teacher Prize worth $1 million on Sunday 19 March.

Yang teaches psychology at The Affiliated Middle School of Kunming Teachers College. China’s development has not been without its difficulties for families. Rules mean that while parents are able to move to cities for new jobs, they often have to leave their children behind for education and other services. This means that families may not see much of each other for years which is hard for the children.

This is where Yang comes in: she sees herself as a support for these students. In the past three years Yang has set up an advice centre in her school. She has also established a group of teachers spread over several different local schools to help empower students and parents as much as possible.

Come back to First News this Sunday, 19 March, at 4pm (GMT) to watch a very special announcement of the winner – it’ll be out of this world! You can read more about the winner in Issue 562 of First News, on sale Friday 24 March.
