Wemerson da Silva Nogueira is one of the ten finalists in with a chance of winning the Global Teacher Prize worth $1 million on Sunday 19 March.

Wemerson is a science teacher at the Escola Antônio dos Santos Neves in Boa Esperança, Brazil. His first school was in an area with a very high crime rate – the school drop-out rate was 50% – and children were not interested in learning. Wemerson decided to add songs to make classes more inspirational. Now his school is considered the best in the city, and has contributed to reducing drug trafficking and violence by 70%.
