Tracy-Ann Hall is one of the ten finalists in with a chance of winning the Global Teacher Prize worth $1 million on Sunday 19 March.
Tracy-Ann is an automotive technology teacher at Jonathan Grant High School in Spanish Town, Jamaica. She did not have successful school years herself due to undiagnosed dyslexia. Instead of higher education, she trained as an automotive technician. Her experience in training other learner mechanics gave her a love of teaching.
After gaining more qualifications, she eventually entered the vocational teachers’ college in Jamaica and graduated top of the class. Her positive approach changed her first teaching class from a group of students who had been written off as ‘poor’ into a great success. They began to excel and were so motivated that eight of them joined the school choir and one became Head Boy at the school. She also started a programme for her class to feed street people. Her students have gone on to a wide range of careers.
