Marie-Christine Ghanbari Jahromi is one of the ten finalists in with a chance of winning the Global Teacher Prize worth $1 million on Sunday 19 March.

Marie-Christine is a PE, maths and German teacher at Gesamtschule Gescher school, in Gescher, Germany. She uses her Sportpaten-project to increase the self-esteem of her students and to strengthen them. Using sport and keep-fit methods also encourages her students to believe in themselves and teaches them to take responsibility and solve problems themselves.

Using her research into the movement behaviour of children in Nigeria, Marie-Christine’s teaching includes African movement games. She says: “It’s not about winning or losing, it’s about rhythm and team spirit” which is how less sporting children can be inspired and not left behind by such activities.

Come back to First News this Sunday, 19 March, at 4pm (GMT) to watch a very special announcement of the winner – it’ll be out of this world! You can read more about the winner in Issue 562 of First News, on sale Friday 24 March.
