In the last year, the number of vegans in the UK has almost doubled.

It’s especially popular to try veganism in January during a 31-day challenge known as Veganuary.

A plant-based diet, also known as a vegan diet, means that somebody eats no meat or other products from animals such as cheese, butter and eggs.

The pros

  • A vegan diet has a smaller carbon footprint than one that is meat-based, meaning it’s better for the environment
  • It’s better for animal welfare
  • There are health benefits

The cons

  • Some people say vegan food doesn’t taste as good as real meat
  • It can sometimes be harder to get all the nutrients you need from a vegan diet
  • Lots of restaurants still have quite limited vegan options
