A store has opened in San Francisco, USA, created and run entirely by AI.

In Andon Market, everything from the merch to the humans working there – and even the colours of the walls – were picked by an AI system named Luna.

The AI was first given a $100,000 (£74,000) budget and access to a company credit card. From there, and without being asked by humans, it put out job adverts and conducted its own interviews to find people to work there. It also generated its own art to sell in the shop.

Before, Andon Labs was using AI to run vending machines, but co-founder Lukas Petersson said this had become too easy for the system. Speaking about the shop experiment, he added: “We’re not doing it to prove that AI should run stores. We’re doing it to find out if they can.”

Under the YouTube video introducing the shop, a lot of people were questioning this wide use of AI. One person commented: “This is not the future we want.”
