DO you wash your hands for 20 seconds after you’ve been to the loo or before you eat?
If the answer is no, you’re not doing it properly, according to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS). Their experts say that the only way to get rid of the bugs that cause colds, flu and diarrhoea is to wash your hands for 20 seconds – the same time it takes to sing Happy Birthday twice.
A survey for the RPS showed that more than a fifth (21%) of people don’t wash their hands after going to the toilet, and 65% don’t wash them before eating.
The RPS wants everyone to be more thorough when washing their hands, as many bugs are becoming resistant to antibiotics, so some infections are becoming harder to treat.
