Controversial decisions by VARs (video assistant referees) could become even more common soon, as football bosses are discussing other areas of the game where VARs could be used.
The VAR system has been praised at times for making the game more fair, but some checks can take an awfully long time, and even then many spectators and pundits still question the final decision.
That’s why some fans weren’t too happy after a report in The Times that IFAB (the International Football Association Board) could make changes to allow VAR to decide on corners and second yellow cards.
Although it could stop wrong decisions changing the outcome of a match, fans will worry that it could slow the game down even more and dampen the excitement.
But the most controversial change that IFAB will consider would be a major overhaul of penalties. It’s been proposed that if a goalie saves a penalty in normal time, the ball will become ‘dead’ and the opposition won’t be able to follow up for a rebound.
