Should scientists leave the Titanic shipwreck alone?

A new expedition has been launched to study the famous Titanic shipwreck in the greatest detail ever attempted.

A team of experts working for the American company RMS Titanic Inc will use state-of-the-art technology to look at the wreck and identify any important artefacts remaining on board.

The team won’t be heading down to the bottom of the ocean themselves, but two robotic vehicles from their ship Dino Chouest will go instead. The vehicles will be programmed to take millions of high-resolution photographs and make a 3D model of the Titanic.

This will be the first commercial mission to visit the famous shipwreck since OceanGate’s tragic attempt last year, when five men died in a submersible (underwater vehicle). One of the men was Frenchman Paul-Henri Nargeolet, who was the director of research at RMS Titanic Inc. A special plaque will be laid on the seabed for him during this mission.

There will also be a memorial service held out at sea to remember the men and all 1,500 people who lost their lives on the Titanic back in 1912, when the ship hit an iceberg and sank in the North Atlantic.

Unless they have good reason to do so, such as preventing such disasters in the future, they should not disturb the final resting place of thousands of people. They should respect all those who lost their lives on the Titanic.
