Hunting groups are calling for parakeets to be added to a list of wild birds that can be legally shot.

The British Association for Shooting and Conservation says that parakeets can harm native birds and destroy fruit crops, and they’re quickly spreading across the UK.

In England, landowners are only legally allowed to shoot the birds if they’re posing a direct threat to wild birds or causing serious damage to crops. In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, it is illegal to shoot them for any reason.

Environment officials will make a decision on the request in August.
