Donald Trump backed down on his threats to take over Greenland, during a stormy visit to Europe last week.

The US president flew to Davos, Switzerland, to attend the World Economic Forum, an annual event for world and business leaders to discuss big global issues.

Greenland is a ‘semi-autonomous’ territory, which means it controls many of its own affairs but is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. However, Mr Trump thinks it’s “vital” to US and global security, because the Arctic island separates the US from Russia and China.

In the days leading up to the event, Mr Trump had become louder in his claim that Greenland should be part of the USA, not Denmark. He posted AI-generated images showing the island belonging to the US. He also threatened European countries with additional tariffs, which are taxes that make it more expensive to sell products, unless they supported his plans.

In Davos, Mr Trump said in a speech that Denmark was too weak to defend Greenland. He also criticised NATO for not supporting the US enough down the years. However, Mr Trump said that he wouldn’t order the US military to invade Greenland and take it by force.
