Should England take the train to matches?

Since professional football involves a lot of travel, it isn’t the most environmentally friendly sport around, but the England team has been asked to make a small difference by taking the train instead of flying.

The Campaign for Better Transport charity has written to the England manager Gareth Southgate and the FA to urge the England team to use trains instead of planes at next summer’s European Championship in Germany.

“The French men’s team has already committed to taking the train for trips of under three hours ahead of Euro 2024,” the letter says. “As the national team, you are role models to millions of people and have the ability to change people’s ways of thinking.”

The charity adds that England can “set an example both to the nation and to the world.”

Premier League teams have been criticised a lot in the past for taking short flights to matches in England rather than taking a train or coach. Planes emit much more carbon per passenger than any other form of transport, especially for short trips.

Where they can!!! I do believe that when big matches are on like the world cup and its far away then sometimes they need to fly.

They could use the trains, however the continental trains of Europe aren't very connected and do require lots of changes, which may involve a lot of stress for the players. I would suggest making a service between the areas, which they did once between Frankfurt and London on the ICE train, that would have a high frequency.

I don’t know why some people voted no but it would harm the planet less if you go on train
