A boy at a school in Oxfordshire is taking on global tech giants Apple over their “insulting and offensive” emoji.

Teddy, aged ten, has launched a petition asking Apple to change both the name and design of the nerd emoji, which currently features glasses and two big teeth.

He told the Henley Standard: “I don’t like the name because I find it rather rude… I think it’s saying that everybody who wears glasses is a nerd even if they don’t mind being called that. You can’t help having to wear them and you want to be like everybody else.”

His petition was first shared around school for his fellow pupils to sign, then shared online – and it now has more than 2,000 signatures! One supporter wrote: “With you all the way, Teddy!”

In his petition, Teddy, who was worn glasses since he was two, told Apple: “We think people who wear glasses are cool and we’re worried that people who are getting glasses for the first time will think they’re going to look like rabbits or rats.” He included a sketch for a new emoji with glasses, which he says Apple should call the ‘genius emoji’.

He told the BBC: “If Apple took my ideas on board, it would feel amazing, and I’d be so excited.”
