Would you prefer to start school at 10AM?

Polls

15th February 2019

MPs have been debating whether secondary schools should start at 10AM instead of 9AM or earlier.

More than 179,000 people signed an online petition about the later school start, saying teenagers work better later in the day. If a petition gets more than 100,000 signatures it has to be debated by UK Parliament.

The petition was started by pupil Hannah Kidner who argues: “Teenagers are so tired due to having to wake up very early to get to school. The Government should require secondary schools to start later, which will lead to increased productivity at school.”

The Department of Education has responded to the petition, explaining that the time you have to start your day is decided by your school.

While some are all for a change in start times, others have expressed concerns that it would disrupt children’s learning and routine.

Some schools in Paris are already trialling a similar scheme for later school hours, with the French government pushing start times from 8AM to 9AM. The question is, do you think you’d work better if you started school later in the morning?

Would you prefer to start school at 10am?

I think we should be able to rest a bit more so we can have more energy for school!

j.brains · 5 years ago

If children went to bed at a sensible time they wouldn't be tired going to school in the morning. Less time on the games console and mobile phones! Parents need to be stricter on the rules!

rebecca.xo · 5 years ago

Yes it would help kids concentrate in lessons!

kiki36 · 5 years ago

The more sleep we get, the more focused we can be.

teamgorbo1 · 5 years ago

I would prefer to start school later because you would be less stressed when you get to school. As long as the work is completed does it matter what time you do it? If starting later helps children when they are growing it's got to be a good thing.

herbology · 5 years ago

Yes definately as having to get up early is a real pain and it means everyone's really tired. My school starts at 8:30 and on my opinion that's way too early. I'm always yawning at school and I sometimes can't focus meaning the I produce isn't always at its highest standard.

herbology · 5 years ago

natalija · 5 years ago

I understand why people would want to start school at 10am but I would rather start it earlier because you are going to miss so much school time and go home later. It might also not work in the winter as it gets darker earlier.

act-now45 · 5 years ago

Yes as it would benefit students who live far away because then they can sleep and get into school on time. Teenagers need a lot of sleep.

super5tar · 5 years ago

Yes because even if you go to bed early some people struggle to sleep and can't concentrate in lessons. Personally, I don't mind finishing school an hour later if school starts at 10

anb12495 · 5 years ago

No. In secondary school, you need to focus on exams. Going to school later ,will just mean that students are more groggy and unwilling to work. If they are sleepy they should just go to bed earlier.

eeldridge · 5 years ago

In the winter it will be really dark walking home, and children may become even more tired because school would end later.

I am late for school every day so id love to come to school at 10 o clock since she yells at me for being late

this is a great opportunity for me

I would love to start school later because I am always yawning at school, and would much prefer more sleep ? so that I feel better when I get up in the morning. I produce better work on a monday , and that just shows how sleep makes a differance.

swace · 5 years ago

I don't think it should because lots of kids would then complain about school ending time - it would have to be later! Also parents probably work to the timings of schools so they can spend time as families...it would mess this up too!?

elephant_m · 5 years ago

I think no because first of all, being early is healthy because if you wake up earlier, you can live longer and have a better lifestyle. Secondly, most parents need to work and they need to be in the office around 9 to 10. They wouldn't be able to drop you off to school, if you live far away. Thirdly, the only reason why you can't wake up is because you aren't having enough sleep. The average amount of hours that teens need is around 8 hours.

Mog18 · 5 years ago

Even though I don't go to school, nor am I old enough to go to secondary school, but I have recently been sleeping till 12:00 in the afternoon, my mum says it's because my body is "developing", basically my body is preparing for puberty. So I believe for a secondary school student (who is most likely "developing" or going through puberty) to be in the proper mental state for a long day of school they need more sleep.

baconcat · 5 years ago

I am always tired when walking into school and almost fall asleep in first lesson! I can’t concentrate because I have lots of homework every night. I would and I am sure that many other children would benefit from this potential change.

baconcat · 5 years ago

gominions · 5 years ago

YYEEEEEESSSS!!! It's because of us having to start school so blumming early that we never have anywhere near enough energy to do anything so this will DEFINITELY be a good thing!! PLS LET IT HAPPEN!!!!!!!! I never get enough sleep like this!!

mrcocopops · 5 years ago

I personally think that teenagers are the ones coursing there own tiredness! They spend far too much times at screens before bed meaning that there sleep is affected. Instead of teenagers moaning about school starting too early they should take action by doing what it takes to switch off there phones at least one hour before bed and making sure they get an early night when required!

skateuk · 5 years ago

yes. I think it's important to get the right amount of sleep. I'm 12, but i still feel tired at school in the morning. Especially in the teenage years i think i'll struggle, so yes.

dcfan · 5 years ago

I think yes, though there are reasons to do what is being done now.

adil_2212 · 5 years ago

Would this apply to the schools all around the UK.

jaelp · 5 years ago

I said yes, because children have to work hard at school. We need energy!!

icestarz · 5 years ago

It might help some people but I would rather go home earlier than later.

hc-524219 · 5 years ago

Yes, because I bet that some students will sleep until 10pm to 12am since they have a lot of homework. It would also help children focus more on their studies as well as getting active since they have a lot of energy.

hc-524219 · 5 years ago

Yes, because if students sleep until 10pm to 12 am because of the amount of homework they get, they should get more sleep so they’re not so tired in school. It would also help children focus more on their studies as well as being active while they’re playing. Lastly, it would mean that their work during school time will be their best and highest standards.

spacegirlg · 5 years ago

Kids would have more time to get up and stuff. I feel exhausted in the mornings. The kids could finish school at the same time though, and have the shorter holidays a bit smaller. And I agree with the first commenter; we should be able to have a bit more rest before school so that we can focus more. I voted a big, big, BIG YES!

piggy01 · 5 years ago

I think that school should start at 10 o'clock because even though I get to bed quite early, I still find it hard to concentrate in lessons because I have to wake up so early; so I think we should go to school at 10 o'clock to make sure people pay attention in lessons more. Teachers would benefit from this too, as they wouldn't have to go to school so early.

dcb10 · 5 years ago

Yes I would because it allows you to have more time to sleep in and also it allows you more time to get ready.

mrsquash · 5 years ago

I think school should start at 10:00am because even though I'm in primary school clubs and activities before school can make pupils even more tired so that when they go to their early morning club they'll basically be going to school normal time

artymartin · 5 years ago

I think that we should start school at 10 AM mainly after holidays because some children might get back late at night from their holiday and if it is school tomorrow then they will fell tried at school. But if they start school at ten AM then they will have had a hour lie in and they will feel more charged up for school.

chahou · 5 years ago

People have to get up early and aren't getting enough sleep because they get up at silly times to start school at eight or nine. Also, in winter it is dark when the students walk to school which, in unlit places is dangerous.

smile2424 · 5 years ago

I vote no because then in the winter people who walk home from school will have to walk in the dark, which is quite scary.

welovenews · 5 years ago

We should start school at 10

sloth2008 · 5 years ago

I don't think we should start later because then pupils may not be learning as much as they need to.

joey_a_g · 5 years ago

Yes because students in secondry schools suffer from stress from exams ect, so they should be given a lie in to help relieve their exam stress

kizzwizz · 5 years ago

No,if you need extra sleep just go to bed earlier. Also ,after sleeping in many people feel more tired than waking up early.

mia-18 · 5 years ago

No i would hate that when you get up earlier you feel more fresh and awake i know it sounds weird but its true and plus it would mess up my whole routine i mean listen guys they would make school start from 10-6 and i would not want to come home at 6. Plus in birmingham and my school is in coventry so i get there on a train and it would be so busy at those times and by the time im home it would be i

mia-18 · 5 years ago

And i agree with j.brains go to bed at a sensible time and you wont feel tired computers and technology mess up our minds

edmonds123 · 5 years ago

i agree joey my brother is about to go to secondary school he wants this to happen

mktc07 · 5 years ago

I said yes because, it may help secondary students with their energy and concentration levels plus, it gives teachers extra time to prepare lessons for their more engaged students.

v_venkie · 5 years ago

I don't think this is a good idea because teenagers have to learn a lot so if teens sleep until 10:00am, then teens might have to
just learn short every single day . Secondary schools start from 8:00am- 5:00pm. If we start later, teens won't get enough educational things in their brain!

dog13 · 5 years ago

NO, unless we are getting an extra hour of school. The reason for this is we might lose vital learning time.

zsanaz3 · 5 years ago

Secondary school pupils should go to bed at a sensible time so they can't say that they are tired.

fdancegirl · 5 years ago

I think we should because most of us have to wake up super early to go to school which means we are not focused in lessons because we are half asleep

docgirl · 5 years ago

Yes because we get more time to sleep, so we can do better in tests.

g0d · 5 years ago

act-now45 · 5 years ago

They should be separated as boys may get rough and could seriously damage a girl. Maybe they could have two sections in the competition one for girls and one for boys, then it would be fair.

flopsy08 · 5 years ago

I think we should start at 8 because then we get home earlier and you can relax. If you start at 10, you get home later and not as much time to relax

megzz123 · 5 years ago

pudseyboy · 5 years ago

I think no because I like getting up and getting school over and done then you can chill out for the rest of tithe day

sophie.w · 5 years ago

yes because I live quite far away from my school so I have to wake up quite early and I'm always so tired in class and yawning

moh694 · 5 years ago

If school started at 10am, it would give teenagers more flexibility about when they go to bed, as MOST teenagers, including me, start to feel tired at around 10:00 in the evening, nallowing their natural body clocks to work as they are meant to, allowing for a lot more sleep, as they would be sleeping when they feel tired.

uglyfrog · 5 years ago

I don't think it should start at 10:00 AM. Firstly every school has 6 hours of work so school would end at 4 pm.
It is DISGUSTING to end at 4 PM because you would have fewer opportunities to do: homework, hobbies, games and possibly TV.

Some people need lots of sleep to have lots of energy for school. Starting school at 10am would give everyone more time to rest.

lolteen23 · 5 years ago

Yes. I agree with everyone actually. I think that, yes teens should spend less time on screens before bed and go to bed earlier, but even if they do do that then it might not help them be less tired. If I go to bed early I still feel tired in the mornings, and if it started at ten then it would give teens time to get up early, properly wake up and refresh themselves and then get ready for school.

zarla_101 · 5 years ago

I don't think it matters in Primary/Junior school and below. Playing mixed genders is great for stopping the sexism and barriers between girls and boys at that age. However, once senior school starts, I think it's best to split them up. I think this because it's a hormonal time for both genders and sometimes there can be awkwardness and distraction (!). Furthermore, it is in boy's biology to be built stronger, faster and stockier. I'm not saying this is the case will all boys, because that would be generalising. But once boys hit puberty the vast majority of them are. This means it would be unfair to let boys and girls compete properly because boys have an advantage. I agree, nature is sexist, but it's how we are and we can't change that. What I don't think is fair is when people say 'oh you can't play that sport because you're a boy/girl'. No, boys can play netball, girls can play basketball. It's 2019, surely we're not still gendering sports? My point is, I say we can do PE together until seniors because it'll be good for us to stop alienating the other gender. After that, it's a bit inappropriate because we're all developing and figuring stuff out, and we shouldn't compete properly because (and this bit sucks) boys will have an advantage if they're developed. We play whatever sport we want though, despite our gender.

moosyb · 5 years ago

i think we should start at 9:00am because no matter what i will still be late

RoseBun · 5 years ago

I know most people would like it to start later, but that would probably mean it finishing at 5 so much later. This means I would get home at six and therefore miss several out of school activities.
Plus most children do not go to bed at sensible times because they are playing on their games consoles or electronics so they are then tired in the day. You just need stricter parents or screen time per day. I am tired s I wake up at 6 each morning so I can catch my early bus but we go to school for a reason and it will help us later on in life if we get as much education as possible. We will no longer have those great scientists and doctors who have saved lives and humans will become lazy. We definitely do not want to end up like the poor dodo bird...
All in all, I thoroughly disagree.

tarzan131 · 5 years ago

If children have more time to sleep then they would be ready to work harder at school. Sometimes at schools they just have assemblies for a long time which could be skipped.

whale333 · 5 years ago

I think that if we started school later, we would have more energy and therefore be able to perform better in lessons such as maths. Also, it could help stop pupils from coming into school late by giving them more time to get ready in the mornings.

graceieeee · 5 years ago

It sounds really stupid but think about it. If you start school at 10 that a whole hour and a half later so you would also end an hour and a half later. And I don't want to end school at like 5...

I think that it would be nice to have a liy-in every school day but if that happens, teachers would use that as an excuse for more homework. Also, starting at 9 isn't that bad and I do early morning clubs with start at 8! So NO!

If a school was to start at 10, wouldn't this resulting we leaving school later than usual, and if not we will be lacking learning material.

gm2005 · 5 years ago

I feel that if as children we went to bed at no later than 9:30 pm we wouldn't be tired but it would be impossible to ensure every single child in the UK goes to bed before 9:30 pm. So in my opinion our learning and education would benefit from a later start to the school day. Although if your parents go to work early then it would be a struggle for those children.

catonclan · 5 years ago

Yes of course, I start school at 8:15 so I have to wake up at 6:30 it really is too early considering it ends usually at 5:15pm and we have a halve day Saturday school and my brothers have tutoring as well!

minilily · 5 years ago

I would rather start school earlier because then it would feel i would be getting away from it quicker.

oakley6 · 5 years ago

School should start at 7:30 am so it can finish around 1:30 pm , this will give kids much longer time in the afternoon to complete all homework , be active and do sport everyday and have enough time to relax and go on social media so they are not tempted to “catch up “ on it when in bed . I believe this will lead to kids getting much more sleep , less stress and being more physically active aswell as more productive in school

oakley6 · 5 years ago

Starting school later will mean kids probably won’t exercise because when they get home fr school which will be even later than normal they will be up late completing homework but then stay up even later to go on social media /watch tv because they know they don’t have to get up early in the morning and most people will sleep till about 9 so there’s very little chance of children exercising before school and this will encourage an unhealthy sleep pattern and unproductive lifestyle

oceangirl · 5 years ago

I don’t think we should

hirdy66778 · 5 years ago

Yes . School should start from 10 am to 4pm. We have the same 6 hours to study and also I don't need to wake up with a stomach acid reflux every morning and I don't need tone be at school late. I am so tired every morning that I have to eat with my eyes closed .

ecopelican · 5 years ago

at school teenagers feel tired due to going to bed late and having lack of energy in the morning

oliver2008 · 5 years ago

we should get to school at 10:00 because we will not be yawning so much.

joe20 · 5 years ago

Children should start school at 10AM beacuse then they have more time to get dressed and a little bit of time to hang out with there friends before school or do extra homework.

iak321 · 5 years ago

Definitely not because if you think about it, going from starting at 8:30 to starting at 10:00 means at the end of the school day, you get home 1hr 30mins later than normal so you don’t have time to do work before going to bed. Also, lunch will be pushed back to about 2:00 which isn’t right because lunch should be at around 12:00.

jake10 · 5 years ago

if kids get late nights then they cannot concentrate in lessons

supergirlx · 5 years ago

Although I don’t have a games console, I still go to bed late and for some people like me, suffer from insomnia so it would be better for children to go to secondary schools later.

shrek123 · 5 years ago

You might not be the best you can be if you do a test at the start of the day because you are barely awake.

dede · 5 years ago

honestly,i would love school to be later but missing an hour of school would make you miss important lessons. Also, you may have to have an extra hour after school and that would be horrible!!!!! :(

lilpenguin · 5 years ago

Only if school ended an hour later too.

lollipop33 · 5 years ago

10 AM? Definitely not. For me, school starts at 8:50 AM and ends at 3:20 PM, lasting six and a half hours, and I do not have a problem with waking up at seven to be on time but I WOULD have a problem with finishing at 4:30 PM. I would not have enough time back at home.

lollipop33 · 5 years ago

Also, why is it all about SECONDARY school pupils? What about PRIMARY school children? Even though I do not get tired, and I am ten, my year in Y6 are going into this too! 10- and 11-year-olds! Think about them!

hptigers · 5 years ago

I don't think we should begin school later because that means school will end later and that takes away from our free time away from school. It is not that difficult getting out of bed because once you get going you feel fine. Children only feel tired because they have late bedtimes.

wolflife · 5 years ago

finbob207 · 5 years ago

yussy2006 · 5 years ago

When you wake up late, your mind is fresh but a little tired, teachers want us to concentrate more, we should have more rest, waking up at 7 is o....kay but I prefer 10 if we want a good happy day. Also when its the weekend most people wake up late and when its Monday your routine gets ruined by waking up earlier than what you did for the weekend, when your alarm rings our minds are like "shut up and get back to bed" so we should have more rest.
