Would you like to be home-schooled?

Polls

2nd March 2018

THE parents of a child actor who starred in the West End musical Matilda have been ordered to send their daughter to school by 7 March – or face jail.

Edward Hardy and his wife Eileen Tracy home-school 12-year-old Lilian Hardy, who played Matilda last year. Their local authority, Westminster Council, says she must attend school because the parents have refused to meet with a home education adviser to check on Lilian’s progress. Instead, they gave the council examples of Lilian’s work. The council says that isn’t enough.

A council spokesman said they “respect the rights of parents to home educate”. He went on to say that parents have a choice to either meet with the adviser or provide statements by education professionals (such as a teacher) that show the child is learning well. Lilian’s parents have refused to do this.

If Lilian isn’t sent to school by this Thursday, her parents could face a fine. They say they won’t pay it, which could lead to a jail sentence.

No because then I will have no friends do??if u agree

aash1234 · 6 years ago

I wouldn't really like to be home-schooled because it would mean that I won't be able to meet any new people and make many friends.

dork · 6 years ago

First one to comment that is brilliant. I don’t want to be home schooled I would not see my friends as often as I see them now.?

netbalover · 6 years ago

I would HATE 2 be home schooled. I'm a people person!!!!? Doing HOMEWORK alone is hard enough for me! let alone doing ALL my lessons alone. Cooped up inside. With no one to talk to. No one but me, and my tutor/parent

Use this emoji :? if u agree
????‍♀️?

tillylove · 6 years ago

I've always been home educated. It's great. You can learn what you want to. I go to loads of groups and have loads of friends.

Esiotrot2 · 6 years ago

I wouldn’t because I would miss out on spending time with my friends.

joabboss · 6 years ago

Me and my brother are home educated, its amazing. We like visiting different places and spending more time with our family and friends. I am building a go kart with my Dad and my brother likes learning Maths.

bob21 · 6 years ago

I've already been home schooled

anjana · 6 years ago

I am kind of the middle. This is because If you go to school you get to explore the world, meet new people and learn new things but that does not mean that you cannot be home schooled. It is the parent's decision to care about the education of their children and might just want to help their children so they can acheive their best in the future. However, home school or no home school children should have the right to have a good education and this is where I strongly stand so honestly I really don't know.

cookies44 · 6 years ago

I wold prefer not to because you would be unable to interact with others whilst learning and, in a school with others you can see at which level you stand at with others.

87trap · 6 years ago

I enjoy being home educated lots more than being in school. I have made lots of friends and go out most days. I have learnt lots of interesting things and go on many trips.

april2008 · 6 years ago

no! i like school the way it is 'cause you get to do real education and get aught the right thing because your parents might teach you how they used to learn back then and you won't be able to catchup on what others are learning

sambrophy · 6 years ago

I don't want to be home-schooled because of you did you wouldn't have any friends, and school is not only place to learn, but also it is a place to socialize.

pheebz10 · 6 years ago

i would like 2 because your parents know u a bit better and they know how u react when you are snuggling with something and some teachers do not know

unicorngrl · 6 years ago

NO.I would not like to be home schooled because it would not give me a chance to make friends at school and i would not know what my proper ability of work was because I wouldn't know how fast other children work

Fablehaven · 6 years ago

Although I would no doubt learn more because I 'll only be learning what I specifically need to learn, I wouldn't be interacting with new people very much; learning to stand people who I don't like; becoming more independent and gaining more streetwise knowledge. Also, the teachers at school have specifically trained for teaching and would be better than an untrained parent. Pupil-teacher relationships would be informal at home, with perhaps a lack of discipline and any problems from home-school could continue into your home life. Finally, when you're being home-schooled, how much exercise do you get? You're not walking to school or even the bus stop and would your parents have the knowledge to give good PE lessons safely and without injuring anybody? How healthy a life would you live?

cubemaster · 6 years ago

First!?

cubemaster · 6 years ago

I wouldn't like to be homeschooled because there would be no other people there that you could make friends with, have lessons with etc. Social skills are an important part of life and if you go into university or get a job you won't be able to make any friends.

daisy101 · 6 years ago

No I would not because you would not have teachers who specialised in one particular subject so you won't get the most out of the subject.

claudine · 6 years ago

I voted no because I like seeing my friends at school and being taught by professionals.

I voted yes because I love my family & want to spend more time with them. Plus, normal school is too easy.

queenloopy · 6 years ago

When you're home schooled you can't make friends. You can't enjoy the fun of school environment.

cooledie · 6 years ago

I wouldn't like to be home schooled because it really isn't that social, and you don't get to meet that many new people or make new friends.

If you were home schooled then would you be able to make many friends? If you were home schooled then would you be able to know about things like Fidget spinners? Well, they are both kind of possible but it would be harder. Besides, the government pays for schools. So I don't see why (at time of posting) it is 168 - 90 to home schooling. Honestly, I don't.

joohyun56 · 6 years ago

I would not like to be home-schooled because it would be more difficult to socialize with people and you might not have as much fun as people who go to school.
On the other hand you might have more education because if it snows a lot many schools close down but you can stay at home and still learn.
Overall I would not like to be home-schooled. (I like the way that I go to school).

sethini · 6 years ago

I think yes because then you can be coached depending on your ability and not relearn things when you could be learning somthing new.

emperor · 6 years ago

No because I wouldn’t be able to talk to my friends, which is best bit about school.

unicorn3 · 6 years ago

No, because you don't have the same opportunities. You won't meet any friends and also, unless your parents are teachers, then it won't be taught properly.

lb07myk · 6 years ago

At school you get a chance to meet new people and you have to learn to share and use the skills you will need in your later life.

aash1234 · 6 years ago

Home-schooling sounds quite cool actually!

aash1234 · 6 years ago

jokes!!!

orangebob9 · 6 years ago

I said no because you wouldn't have any friends and you couldn't work with a partner who is your age and at the same level as you>

woof04 · 6 years ago

I am already home-schooled. It has a lot of benefits - for example, I get more free-time and it means being able to go on holiday at any time of the year, but I don't get to do PE, Drama or Art, which always sounds like a fun thing to do. I also don't get to see my friends as often.

cmi_hall1 · 6 years ago

No because I wouldn't make any friendships and do school trips
and things like that.

dude28899 · 6 years ago

Yes, because it would be fun but then I wouldn't have any school friends. :)

sophette · 6 years ago

Not really. You would never see your friends,or make any for that matter, and it would be... boring I guess!! The only time I would want to do it is during a subject that isn’t too important and that I hate and that is boring in my opinion. I wouldn’t like to do it all the time though... ?

sophette · 6 years ago

Put this ? emoji at the end of your comment if you agree with me!!
??????????????

macaroon8 · 6 years ago

No, because weekends would become boring!!!! I also believe it wouldn't be as hard because you maybe in your bed doing a test which wouldn`t be fair on any one else- for example your parents would have to maybe give up their job for you.

oceancraze · 6 years ago

My school covers everything I need to know to help me with a better chance of getting the future I want. I think
that if I would be home schooled I might not achieve that well. Also an important part of school is friends, I think I
might not have as many friends as I have now if I did not go to school.

oceancraze · 6 years ago

popcorn987 · 6 years ago

i'm not sure... it would be fun because you could have more freedom with the work and it could could be kind of twisted to your abilities. On the flip side, you wouldn't learn to socialise and won't make as many friends.

popcorn100 · 6 years ago

I wouldn't get a chance to socialise and would not be offered a wide range of clubs/activities/exclusive lessons. I also wouldn't be able to meet new people and teachers, creating friendships.

grangerfan · 6 years ago

No because I would get bored eventually and I would miss having different people to play with and talk to. I also would work better at school as I have a different environment.

elise2006 · 6 years ago

I am not to sure because if I was home school then I might have more opportunities but I also may no.

koalalover · 6 years ago

I think no because it would be harder to make friends and you won't learn how to work as a team which could lead to not being very good at everyday social skills, like making new friends.

hamster7 · 6 years ago

I think a bit off both I suppose every child would like to be home schooled but you would miss things like P.E and break time when you play with your friends.

kawaiicat · 6 years ago

I think no because I won't be able to see my friends or go on fun trips as a class!

wren · 6 years ago

I am already homeschooled. It gives me so much more freedom to learn the things that are relevant to my life and my future. I am not being forced through a system that academically and socially dictates to me what that future will be.

Homeschooling doesn't work for everyone, but it is an amazing opportunity for others. A lot of people think all home-educated kids are socially awkward and isolated, but the truth is that we often have much better people skills than regular-schoolers since we constantly mix with people of all ages and there's much less bullying and social pressure within the homeschooling community.

We're also not all behind learning-wise. A lot of young people are taken out of the school system because it forces all kids to learn in exactly the same way and some kids are super smart, just not programmed to learn in am academic way.

We also have a much brighter potential for the future. Life isn't all about GCSE results and getting a good job. True, that's important, but what about life skills? Compassion and hospitality? Experience of other cultures? This is what will make a difference in out crazy world, people with unique and kind personalities, not people programmed to earn the maximum amount of money.

smudge55 · 6 years ago

I am home educated and I love it! It means you are really flexible. I get to see friends who live far away and close by more often. There are loads of amazing clubs such as Sports, drama, sewing, horse-riding (That's my favorite!) football, tennis, science, art, etc. You make loads of friends. Also, you can get one to one help with subjects you struggle with, and learn in a way that suits you. And we can drive to see my Grandparents and Great grandma almost every week. And I get to spend LOTS more time with my bunny! :-)

reader9000 · 6 years ago

NO/YES I can't make up my mind as if I was I would not learn social skills but at home it is a more relaxed learning enviroment

fluffy14 · 6 years ago

I voted no because you wouldn't make as many friends as you would at school so I prefer going to school than I would to be home schooled

tiger6 · 6 years ago

I think no because you don't get as many friends - all my best friends came from school, plus teachers are more used to teaching. Also, it's good to learn to work well with other children

fwsa · 6 years ago

No, I would not like to be Homeschooled, as it would be a LOT harder to see my friends and I wouldn’t have as much equipment as the school does ☹️ And I’d be with my annoying little brother all day ? and it is very important to stay in society, and being wrapped up away from it only makes that more difficult.

binbag27 · 6 years ago

I really don't see the point, more money, less time for parents. I object!!!

lavender08 · 6 years ago

Why would I want to?! :)
I wouldn't have any friends I see every day and it would be extremely boring because you can't do PE and group activities

dachshund7 · 6 years ago

I would hate to be home-schooled! you would not meet friends and I would find it extremely lonely! I think it should not be allowed for children to be home-schooled as they will not grow up with the social skills they need to meet other people and mix with them in the future if they go to university or college. I find it unfair on the children so I vote no!

dachshund7 · 6 years ago

you will fall behind on learning and it would feel very strange to be taught by your parents! its unfair on children and you are isolating your children from the outside world and making it hard for children in the future i totally disagree and think it is a preposterous idea!!!

ruthlesley · 6 years ago

Home education sounds much better than being stuck in school. I could make some proper friends in the groups who I choose myself, and there would be much less stupid bullying. I could learn loads of interesting stuff and go anywhere to find things out and have fun. And we could be outside lots and play more, so be happier and more free to be ourselves.

serenity · 6 years ago

Home-schooling is a much better choice than school! I can’t beleive how many people replying on here seem to actually think that if they were home educated they wouldn’t see friends or go on trips and that they would be taught by their parents! These people don’t know what home education is! Home education is not school at home. You don’t sit at the kitchen table doing work sheets! You go out and learn at meet ups, groups, trips out. You spend every day with tons of friends. Your parents don’t stand at a white board lecturing you! You don’t do worksheets or text books. Home educated children learn in the real world! They don’t think life is about being ordered around by an adult and only working with people that were born within 12 months of you! ?. I feel sorry for school children who have such a small range of friends and are forced to learn subjects in a classroom and at a pace dictated by a government official who probably went to school at the same time as my grandparents!

radishes10 · 6 years ago

I think being home schooled, although it may be better for some people, would make it quite hard to meet new people and meet friends, and you might be less prepared for when it comes to things like university and other life skills ????

kgrewal · 6 years ago

You miss out on school trips and a chance to make friends.

ozlover · 6 years ago

I know you will have no friends but if you get home schooled you don't have to wake up extra early and you don't have to get dressed in the same uniform.

bigfatcat · 6 years ago

I would HATE to be homeschooled because you would never make friends and your social life and skills would go down. You would be stuck in a house most of the day, what about home school P.E for your health? Sometimes it’s good to getaway from your house and be somewhere else with your friends.
?

firefox24 · 6 years ago

I would feel more confident with my parents and siblings, anyway I can make friends outside of school!

xrony_s · 6 years ago

I am Home-Schooled. I looked up Home-schooled status in learning compared to public school status. The home-schooled status was just a bit better. this is because you get to learn what you need and you don’t have to take part in subjects which you don't need for your future. it does get a bit lonely though and some home-schooled people i know end their studies at lunch and their a bit behind on work. I sometimes wish I went to school but at other times I feel good to be home-schooled.

pinkmonkey · 6 years ago

I am home-educated. I think the people saying that they wouldn't like to be home-educated don't know enough about it. I get to do lots of activities which I enjoy and see my friends or socialise. When I was at school, it was much harder to learn because it was loud and busy. Now that I am home-educated I can choose what I would like to learn and do it in peace and quiet or go to busy activities and groups as well.

The good things about going to school is the fact that you can socialise with people and learn from the professionals.
You will have much better social skills if you aren't home-schooled and that is a great talent to have.

You can also join in to drama classes and art classes or you can just use rescources that are online. Home schooling is actually fun.

I would not like to be home schooled, because I wouldn't have as many friends, due to the fact that I have met most of my friends through being at school with them. In addition, my mum/dad would probably get stressed trying to teach me 5 days a week. Finally, it is not particularly fair on the children that have to attend a public school, as they don't get as much attention as the children that ARE home schooled.
