Surgeons in the USA have performed the world’s first successful transplant of a pig kidney to a human!
A 62-year-old man called Richard Slayman received a kidney from a genetically-modified pig at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Slayman was suffering from kidney disease, but is recovering well following the four-hour operation.
Dr Michael Curtis, a boss at eGenesis – the company that supplied the kidney – called it a “major breakthrough in science and transplant medicine.”
It’s hoped that it could open the door to thousands more life-saving animal-to-human transplants.
