Should your family be made to pay a fine if you keep being late for school?

PARENTS could be fined if their kids keep being late for school.

There are already fines if you miss school without getting permission. Now, schools in places like Essex, Hampshire and the West Midlands are bringing in fines for pupils who are late.

Warwickshire County Council has said families could get the penalty charges if children regularly arrive more than half an hour after the register is taken. Parents of students at Winter Gardens Academy in Essex face fines of £60 for lateness, which will double to £120 if not paid within three weeks, says The Sunday Times.

Neath Port Talbot Council said they would hand out a fine if a pupil turned up late at least ten times.

I am in the middle. If someone has family problems or have a valid reason for their dismissal then they don't have to pay, however i think it is not wise for children to spend time out of school for holidays or who can't be bothered to even come anyway, then yes i agree.

radishes10 · 7 years ago

I'm also in the middle because if they have family issues they should tell the school to let them know that they might be often late. However, I understand that maybe if parents drive their children to school, they can't help being late because of traffic.☺?????????

sunglasses · 7 years ago

No!!! Definitely not. I'm always late for school due due to the fact that I live so far away but the school doesn't mind. I think if the people tell the school they might be late, then they won't have to pay the fine.

waterfight · 7 years ago

I think parents should give a reason otherwise they should pay if they did it for 10 times in a row (not weekends)

rebecca.xo · 7 years ago

It depends but sometimes it's not their fault if they are late because there might be traffic.

sophette · 7 years ago

Yes, unless they have a reason that they tell the school about

amynatalie · 7 years ago

If you live far away then it is not fair that you have to pay a fine JUST because of bad traffic or other issues with the time you have to get to school. But if someone is just always late and lives close to their school too then they should pay a fine.

girlywirly · 7 years ago

I dont think people should pay fines because what if you live somewhere really far away or your child has a problem, it is cruel to parents because you cant control traffic either!

cutegirl10 · 7 years ago

I think no beacuse you may be at the doctors or may be ill?

albus2007 · 7 years ago

Some times my bus is late so me and my friends are late

tramptrump · 7 years ago

Same

happy4456 · 7 years ago

No, they might be late for personal reasons and the council are gonna fine them for that. Ok, I guess it is wrong to say "My alarm didn't work" seeing as I wake up at 4:30 voluntarily. But still, if their alarm doesn't work, they are probably gonna fix it over the weekend, because some adults work 9 to 5. Unfortunately, people don't realise this and fine them £60 or so because they have trouble waking up.
that's sad.

ac20 · 7 years ago

Well, they should be quicker(!)

mrcocopops · 7 years ago

well im in the middle usually when somebody late they say something like "oh i got stuck behind a tractor. Or something like that" well if there was i diversion they could of taken why did' they take it? I would blame them for that. But if there was no diversion i would do the same with heavy traffic etc... So I think parents should be fined if they are late for no reason and haven't got promission from the school to come in late they should be fined. If they do have promission from the school for any reason there fined! if they live in areas where traffic is heavy e.g. London parents should check how heavy the traffic is in the morning and make a decision what time they should wake up and set off for school. So I'm kind of in the middle but mainly I'm a yes because if a pupil is late i can guarantee it's NOT with the schools prommision Lucky in my school that doesn't happen that much as we DON'T live in an area were there is heavy traffic to get stuck behind, only the odd tractor! I'm really interested to see what you think. Leave you comment down below!

poptyfan_ · 7 years ago

I Said NO you should not pay because Your Waisting money on school and in my school some people arnt allowed to walk or talk at playtime If You were punished like that i would not pay it

shpee · 7 years ago

Yes. You're losing out on education and disrupting others education as well. So, yes, you should be made to pay a fine. I don't see why people would say no to it.

despacito9 · 7 years ago

hhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmm.......... you should bring a note for personal reasons or valid excuses

livjiv · 7 years ago

no , because sometimes you can't help it and it's not fair i mean it's not like we get to chose to go to school or not ? , i'm always late and the thing that always makes me late is actually school , because of stress and getting everything ready and making sure i don't forget anything , because my school is quite strict . Also it could be someone's car if they can't afford to get one or afford the bus , but it's too far away to walk to school and it's not fair because it is just costing them even more money .
um yeha , that is what i think ??

f10 · 7 years ago

I personally agree that parents should not be fined as most parents are responsible and would inform school of their child's absence and have a valid reason for it. But if I was being balanced it would help raise money for schools around the UK.

evadore · 7 years ago

No because some people might have no choice but to be late as the start of school might clash with other things.

scientist7 · 7 years ago

Why such a severe consequence? So silly! Should have a step before detention or detention if extreme but if there is a specific reason only then it's alright.

akurapaty · 7 years ago

You never know why they are late!!!

akurapaty · 7 years ago

I agree with despacito9

Sashgirl06 · 7 years ago

No! Definitely not! I think that's a bad solution, just blaming it on the parents. I know it may disrupt lessons for teachers, but people can't always help it. They might be late because of traffic, or something they can't control, so you shouldn't fine them!

Sashgirl06 · 7 years ago

I agree with scientist7

annitdm15 · 7 years ago

orangebob9 · 7 years ago

I'm in the middle. If the bus was late, they shouldn't have to pay but if they were dawdling around then they should.:-)

themanspan · 7 years ago

NO

ozzie27 · 7 years ago

YES!!!!! Air pollution is killing hundreds while the parents are just faffing about with their children which is fine, but TURN YOUR MOTER OFF!!!!

ozzie27 · 7 years ago

Sorry wrong poll and then yes i in the middle

wren · 7 years ago

It depends why you're late.

kawaii101 · 7 years ago

I say no because I live far away from school and have to take a train to get to school and I have to get to school for registration by 8:20 which is very early. I am normally late and if my parents are fined then its a bit unfair.

emperor · 7 years ago

Of course people should be fined! OK, I agree that being fined because of family problems or living far away is a bit mean, especially if they are not wealthy. To be honest I think people shouldn't be charged, but I put yes because it depends how late they are. I am usually am two minutes late, because the traffic is so bad and there are so many traffic lights, but if you are like a whole lesson late, of course you should be fined.

dorito · 7 years ago

As I'm always late to school, like every day, I would understand. people don't mean to be late, they just are.

claudine · 7 years ago

Half an hour is a long time and it's regularly not once. I think they should look into why they were late - traffic isn't their fault but oversleeping or laziness is.

joohyun56 · 7 years ago

i chose no because a person in my school has to wake up at 6:00 am in the morning because they live so far away from our school and they are always late because of traffic.

catonclan · 7 years ago

I think no but common lateness should be fined because it is usually preventable and is damaging the Childs education.

catonclan · 7 years ago

@THE37THCOMMENT

catonclan · 7 years ago

LOL

catonclan · 7 years ago

ha

tolu · 7 years ago

it is not fair on the adults

april2008 · 7 years ago

seriously when someone's late just because of family business it doesn't mean you have to still pay so I personally think no

TSHD789 · 7 years ago

Yes-if nothing is done about it, the parents and child would never learn.

bigdream · 7 years ago

its not their fault if you r late for school. It may be because there was a traffic jam. Or the roads were closed so you had to go a different way around, you may have to drop somewhere of at the airport or something like that so your parents should have to pay a fine

zayd-12 · 7 years ago

nobecause so etimes people are late because they live far away i live 2 hours away

prongsii · 7 years ago

Do these parents actually CARE about school? Especially with Primary School, school doesnt do MUCH to help. sow why, if these parents dont care, do they have to PAY about something they dont care about? And dont get me wrong: my parents care about education cos otherwise, why would i have a bersary and maths award and haveing passed my math GCSE at the age of 11?

ajmyles · 7 years ago

If somebody has personal reasons to be late then it's totally wrong

leahpanda4 · 7 years ago

My brother used to go to school and he would have sever anxiety about going to school and would lock himself in the car if he had to when it was time for school so no, parents shouldn't be fined

asialife · 7 years ago

how han they do that that is so mean

3v0charl · 7 years ago

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

frankied · 7 years ago

I agree with most of the comments that have been made. If someone is late or frequently late then the school should look into why the person is late. But also, if you are being late just because you get up late in the morning or something silly then yes they should definetley be fined.

foodiegirl · 7 years ago

For definite,if you cause of traffic it's your own fault u should've checked and got up earlier.
Plus you are missing educational time.

foodiegirl · 7 years ago

I am amazed at how many people said 'no'

bruh12345 · 7 years ago

I agree with anjana and radishes10 because its not your fault I

daisy101 · 7 years ago

If your 10 minutes late for school every day of the year that's like taking 3 days off school for an unauthorised holiday which you would get fined for. What is the difference?

snowleopar · 7 years ago

i think if its a private school you could but only after they have a warning but it does not make a difference if there just 30 mins late

ewok5 · 7 years ago

No way!

calam12 · 7 years ago

NEVER

ninjahari · 7 years ago

blackmaxie · 7 years ago

yes and no some people have a good reason for being late but some don't have a reason other then being lazy or just being late

LeoCOOL · 7 years ago

bobfm · 7 years ago

yes we should be going to school

dcfan · 6 years ago

Imagine if, like me, your family were regularly late to school because two of them had sleep problems . How would you feel if your family had to pay a fine for reasons like that, which were out of their control?

flossingg · 6 years ago

That is unfair, it's not their fault.
Also radishes10 how do you get emojis

flossingg · 6 years ago

Why, because it is a waste of money when it is a simple accident that cannot be helped. If you are just Not bothered, you should only get a suspension at least. just get your parents to tell the truth when you get there however you were late.

Suspension
Telling Off

Detention
Embarrasment

Why does it exist, suspensions are good, you don't have to go to school for ages. that is cool, even though I don't have to go to school. that is epic reply if you are homeschooled like me

shreddeddo · 6 years ago

That is just mean!

shreddeddo · 6 years ago

That is just mean! I mean if there is traffic that can't be helped

jedigeorge · 6 years ago

only if it is their fault and it should be small
