FEAR of crime is affecting the happiness of 2.2 million teenagers in the UK.

One in three teenage girls are fearful of being followed by a stranger, and one in four boys are worried they’ll be assaulted, new research from The Children’s Society reveals.

The charity’s 2017 Good Childhood Report has found that more than one million older children are dealing with at least seven serious problems in their lives, which harm their happiness. Fear of crime has come out as the biggest of the issues for children aged 10-17, with almost two in five worried about falling victim to two or more crimes.

A 13-year-old boy said: “You’ve got to fight to like kind of survive around this area. You have to stick up for yourself the whole time.”

Closely following the fear of crime were the worries of 2.1 million teenagers whose parents are struggling to pay the bills.

Matthew Reed, chief executive of The Children’s Society, said: “Teenagers are coming under pressure in all areas of their lives, whether it’s being afraid to walk down their street, worrying about money, or having a parent who’s seriously unwell and this is damaging their wellbeing. Sadly we know many of these teenagers will only get help if they reach crisis point – such as running away from home, or abusing alcohol or drugs. With a £2 billion funding gap for children’s services looming, children are increasingly finding themselves with nowhere to turn, putting them at greater risk.”

The Children’s Society is calling for the Government to look at the lack of money for children’s services – predicted to be short of £2bn by 2020 – and for local government, police forces, schools and other local agencies to work together to improve the wellbeing of children in their area.

I worried about crime when I was younger but now I just sort of just tell myself that it is what it is, and if we get involved, we get involved.

banjoblaze · 7 years ago

I'm nearly thirteen, by the way.

shpee · 7 years ago

Yes, but not in the way of being assaulted or whatever. I'm more scared of being robbed or someone being inside the house. But being assaulted? Not really.

radishes10 · 7 years ago

I sometimes get worried about criminals doing damage or robbery to our house when we're on holiday and sometimes it affects how much I enjoy it because I am worried about it :(

Umbrella4 · 7 years ago

Yes. Although I sort of know it's not going to happen but i still worry ever so SLIGHTLY! ?

gscornmell · 7 years ago

I worry about crime but you know i am not the only one ?

rowanjean · 7 years ago

You may not worry about crime now because you are used to it but our world shouldn't be used to it. Crime should not be happening!

ronandmimi · 7 years ago

I'm like banjoblaze worried about it when I was little and now I don't if your close or involved your unlucky but they hopefully will not target us

kawaii101 · 7 years ago

I am a bit worried about assaults and stuff like that to be honest especially after all the attacks happening around the world... but I am safe so I don't worry about it too much

spikyriver · 7 years ago

I guess that if you know someone that has been a victim of crime you would be afraid, especially if it was someone close to you, but otherwise I don't see reason to be afraid

rainbow07 · 7 years ago

I don't worry about crime as I know that I'm safe.

ninjahari · 7 years ago

I used to never worry about crimes, but now more terrorist acts are happening, I'm getting anxious. Hopefully, terrorists will eventually stop.

littleem · 7 years ago

I close any window possible at night.

emango · 7 years ago

Because there has been so much much crime in my area, every morning when I walk to school I'm worried that I'm going to be followed. With all the terrorist attacks that happen, I'm always worried my family and friend will get killed or hurt. School is stressful enough as it is without having to worry about my safety living in a council estate. My Brother's bike was stolen last week, and I'm worried that someone will try and break in. I have so many worries about crime, even though I do try to ignore the because there is a very low chance you will be involved in any of these things.

fox64 · 7 years ago

pusheen10 · 7 years ago

I worry because of what's happening in the world and all the attacks that are happening to innocent people. They shouldn't be happening.

I worry lots about crime, but I feel safe when with a responsible adult or my friend. The sorts of crimes that worry me are robberies and biphobic/homophobic crime. I don't worry about terrorist attacks because where I live is a rural area which isn't likely to be bombed or an attack taking place. I think the fact you have witnessed crime makes you more likely to be afraid, though thankfully I have not witnessed any. I think there should be more policemen on streets in towns and cities, as this makes people feel reassured about crime.

chrischros · 7 years ago

I am terrified I will encounter somebody who will hurt me, steal from me, abuse me or at worse kidnap or kill me. I would really like to see more armed police officers in the street.

raygt1 · 7 years ago

I'm scared about crime but I think that we shouldn't live in fear

owly · 7 years ago

When I was 5 or something, every night I worried about being robbed and still do 5 years later.

radishes10 · 7 years ago

I get scared about lots of weird things that probably won't happen, but crime is not one of them ?there are so many terrorists around these days ?

happy4456 · 7 years ago

yes, always..... if there was another route instead of taking the train I would take that route. When my mum said that i had to take the train in winter - i nearly cried. This is because of all the terrorists. There best attack is the train - loads of people get on it so the terrorists would benefit a lot.
However, I am fortunate enough to live in a remote town, which(on the map) is like the size of a pea!! Also, even though I just started a well known secondary school, I'm fine with it because the location isn't very well known! I wish we had peace in the world... that would be the best. Living in fear of everyone and everything is not the way to go. yet people seem to have a weird satisfaction when someone is hurt. Well, that's sad!

oceangirl · 7 years ago

I do worry about crime especially terrorists

ciaranl_07 · 7 years ago

I live just outside London. I live in a very safe area. Crime is verry rare where I live.

slollypop · 7 years ago

I worry about crime: a lot. It makes me sad that when I get on a bus I have to constantly check my bag because I'm afraid someone might steel it... I'm really scared of going to concerts, I only went to one big concert and I don't like this fear especially as my big dream is to go to a Taylor Swift concert, I used to be worse: I go to a lot of classical concerts and I was in a small theatre and I constantly checked there was no one suspicious. I once got really scared because there was a red flashy light and I thought it was a bomb?? I once used to be scared of going to church but I soon for over it... Kind of. I'm afraid in the plane, it makes me really sad to think that I can't bring myself to think of going to America, for example, because I'm afraid of being attached. I'm not really scared of walking in the streets even though my Mom has drilled in my head stories of kidnapped childrens... Though I get really scared when someone comes closer to me, then I realise it's because they want to read a notice that's behind me. I find it comforting the fact they there are other people who think like me ?

sockdog · 7 years ago

sunglasses · 7 years ago

Yes I do.

oliverj · 7 years ago

Because I know that I live in a strong house and protected house and that I am safe.?

epicboy@11 · 7 years ago

No, as I think that why would i ever do crime anyways? so I've never feared it.????

ZENCE40 · 7 years ago

All these horrible terror attacks start to worry me. There are also 2 people in my school who have family that have recently died.

izzy_xxxxx · 7 years ago

Assaults, thefts and terrorist attacks wonts just stop, unless we make them. People I know have been followed by strangers on their way home from school. This has to be reported, and we have to do something about it.

2266flash · 7 years ago

No, but I worry about other people. just it is so rare.

xoxemmadb · 7 years ago

zeushades8 · 7 years ago

No cuz I am strong ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

ki3ran · 7 years ago

Crime is getting more and more serious. I guess we will just have to carry on and hope nothing happens to us, friends or family. I wish it could happen to no one but I don't think the world will ever have "Proper" peace
(I don't mind my opinion being posted in your magazine first news.)

turquoise4 · 7 years ago

Yes , when I was younger I did, and had sleepless nights although now I think that theifery is very rare and if a thief wants something that you have he/she will not necessarily target you house. I mean there are thousands of people who have that particular thing that you have! So I say no need to WORRY you just need to be CAUTIOUS of your possessions from anyone. :) ????????

charlton07 · 7 years ago

I am aware of the high crime rate in London,as it is a busy capital city.I am quite afraid of crime ,though only in times of hardship.

frogo45 · 7 years ago

i also worry sometimes but it just happens

frogo45 · 7 years ago

thanks turquoise4

holholster · 7 years ago

Normally, I don't worry about crime, because I live in a city where this type of illegal action is very rare. However, if my house was broken into, I probably wouldn't be able to stop worrying about the issue.

ti-10 · 6 years ago

Crime is scary. Even though I am 10, I worry about it. It is just SOOOOOOOOO SCARY!!!!!! All the bad things that are happening in this world, it just is not right!

jedigeorge · 6 years ago

saxophone7 · 5 years ago

I don't worry about crime but I live in Harrogate which has one of the lowest crime rates in the UK so...yeah...but I guess other people could worry about it. I used to live in Wolverhampton and there it had really highost crime levels we were broken into 5 times in 2 years
