A fifth of children in the UK aren’t happy at school, new findings reveal.

The annual National Parent Survey, organised by the charity Parentkind, has found that, of the UK’s ten million pupils, one in five say that they’re happy “never”, “rarely” or only “sometimes”. Notably, unhappiness is twice as high among secondary school children than it is among primary school children.

Lessons are a big part of this – more than two-fifths of children say they don’t find their lessons interesting, while nearly a third of secondary school children say they don’t think that what they’re being taught will be useful or important to them in the future.

Jason Elsom, from Parentkind, called the findings a “wake-up call”, because happiness in the classroom is vital for learning, wellbeing and future success. He said: “We must look closely at how schools support children as they move from primary to secondary, how they ensure lessons feel meaningful and inspiring.”
