The House of Lords has voted that children under 16 should be banned from social media.

Its members have suggested a change to UK law. They say that the government should decide which social media platforms are to be included in the ban, and that the tech companies involved should use strict age checks to enforce it.

One of the members pushing for the ban, ex-schools minister Lord Nash, said: “We’re facing nothing short of a… catastrophe caused by the fact that so many of our children are addicted to social media… the evidence is now overwhelming as to the damage that this is causing.”

Now, the law change will be discussed in the House of Commons, and MPs will decide whether they agree.

Many people already think it’s a good idea, including the leader of the Conservatives, Kemi Badenoch.

The charity Parentkind says that 13 out of 14 parents (93%) in the UK think that social media is harmful to children and young people.

Not everybody agrees with a ban, though. Some say that social media can have a positive impact, and that children’s opinions should be heard. Children’s charity the NSPCC says that instead of a ban, existing child safety rules should be enforced more strongly.
