The basic yearly salary of a member of Parliament (MP) in the UK will rise to £98,599 next month.
MPs are politicians that grown-ups have voted to sit in Parliament and represent their local area.
They’re getting a 5% pay rise, which is higher than the level of inflation (the rate at which prices in the UK are rising), which is 3%. It’s also a larger pay rise than the government has awarded teachers (4%) and NHS staff (3.3%) in England.
Richard Lloyd is the head of the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority, which sets the basic salary. He defended the pay rise, explaining that the job of an MP has changed. He said their work is now more complex, and they have to deal with abuse and intimidation.
John O’Connell, the head of the TaxPayers’ Allowance, said: “After years of broken promises, falling living standards and deteriorating [worsening] public services, MPs are being rewarded for failure.”
In addition to their salary, MPs in the UK can also claim to receive an allowance for a home, plus their transport to travel to Westminster.
They’re paid a bit more than MPs in France, but less than those in Ireland, Australia, Germany and the USA.
