Is your school alive with the sound of music (or, at least, squeaky recorders)?

A survey by music exam board ABRSM has found that, over the past ten years, the number of children playing the recorder has almost halved, from a quarter of kids in 2014 to one in six today.

Chris Bobb, from ABRSM, said: “The recorder has been great… but schools are now looking at other instruments that can be used [in lessons] – the ukulele and acoustic guitar among them.”

However, there’s also been a drop in the number of pupils learning any sort of instrument. Some can’t afford to, while others prefer creating online videos, instead.

That said, the survey showed that five in six of you think that making, learning and listening to music is key for your mental health.
