Teenagers are unsure about whether using AI for their schoolwork is okay or if it’s cheating, an Oxford University Press (OUP) report has found.

Fewer than half (44%) of students say it’s cheating to use AI to complete all their homework. However, only a quarter (24%) regularly use AI tools for their homework. Nearly three-quarters (72%) chose not to use AI when given the option, with many saying that they preferred to express their own views.

Just one in seven students said their school had given them clear enough guidance on what AI use is acceptable. In the classroom, three-quarters would like teachers to use AI to support lessons, but almost three-quarters say that teachers bring things to the school day that AI can’t replace, such as understanding and personal connection.

The OUP surveyed 3,100 students aged 13-18, then spoke to 700 pupils from 20 schools to reach their findings.
