THOUSANDS of PE teachers are to receive new training, after it was found that almost one in five secondary school pupils hate PE lessons.

Around £13.5 million worth of free training will be offered to 17,000 secondary school PE teachers across England to help them change attitudes among pupils who dread sports lessons. The lessons are being funded by Sport England, in partnership with the Teaching Schools Council.

The funding follows a 2015 Sport England survey of more than 450 school and college students (aged 14 and above), which showed that around 19% of pupils disliked or even hated sport and PE. Less than half of those surveyed viewed PE as a positive experience.

Jennie Price, Chief Executive of Sport England, said: “Lots of people have bad memories of being picked last for a team, or just feeling really uncomfortable. This programme is designed to stop that happening. It will help schools and individual teachers design a wider range of opportunities to increase young people’s enjoyment of sport and PE, which gives them a much better chance of being active in later life.”

Sport England says the training won’t change the curriculum, but will “enhance existing good practice” and “support necessary improvements” for all secondary school pupils. It’s the first time in ten years that secondary school PE has had a lot of money pumped in to it.

Yeah! Who doesn't!

rabitman · 6 years ago

PE is really boring. There's nothing fun about it.

moph · 6 years ago

I really like PE because it's a chance to get active in lessons instead of writing or sitting down all the time but I also think it's alright if you don't because you're free to like or hate it.

plane · 6 years ago

I like P.E because you get physical excercise. This can stop child obesity.

chahou · 6 years ago

No, the people who are good at sports like it but then crow over you when you can’t do things properly. Also, the teachers expect you to be good at everything and if you are not it gets more and more horrible. The teachers overestimate what you can do and so it gets boring and a chore.

natalija · 6 years ago

I love PE because it is fun to move around when you have been sitting down all day in the classroom.

abdul786 · 6 years ago

Yeah its so fun best is football

sfm0707 · 6 years ago

I like PE but my teachers are quite loud so not really

ebbaskates · 6 years ago

PE is an excellent chance to get some excercise and become healthier ??????? ?‍♀️?

cheezepuff · 6 years ago

Of course I like PE! It gets you up and running and makes you feel active!!We do all sorts like rugby, cricket ,Football and loads more.

pawsomecat · 6 years ago

Yes because we play sports. Dogeball is my favourite.

cloudysky · 6 years ago

Kind of. I'm not so good with balls, however I do like hockey and swimming. So I really couldn't say yes or no.

17sivah · 6 years ago

I love PE as it helps others communicate more, make you fit and allow you to remember someone's name!!

uglypigeon · 6 years ago

I only like it when we do swimming (compulsory for primary school students) in P.E (we walk to the local pool). In normal P.E we don’t get any breaks, even if we’re really sweaty and our teacher shouts a lot. Also I think we do to much P.E, that cuts into our learning time.

goldyshark · 6 years ago

I HATE PE though I do get why people like. The only sport I like is diving.

dogsruleok · 6 years ago

I don't think there is anything wrong with PE itself it's a ordinary subject like any other. The reason not many people like PE is because of the physical activity involved.

hc-524219 · 6 years ago

I like PE but not actually love it... I like it because it makes me more healthy and exercising. I don’t really love it because it can sometimes be really hard and tought to complete the tasks that the PE teacher wants us to do... but I know that staying healthy is more important than not doing PE. Plus, if u practise more, u get better at the things that u weren’t good at doing.

amo · 6 years ago

yes , P.E is amazing and a great way to keep fit because for some children doing P.E is the only exercise they get so if P.E was taken of the school curriculum the some kids won't be doing any sport at all

jake10 · 6 years ago

I enjoy it because it gets you out of the classroom

sma · 6 years ago

I like OR but it depends what it is. I like rounders and tag rugby but I don't like tennis.

oceangirl · 6 years ago

YES

legoben200 · 6 years ago

PE Uses time that could be used on other subjects like Maths or English.

88unicorn · 6 years ago

I like PE but it normally depends on what sport we’re doing, for example, I am bad at football and therefore don’t like it, but I am reasonably good at netball and I love doing it. I understand that some people don’t like any sports but it’s good to get some fresh air now and then and it is good exercise.

88unicorn · 6 years ago

I like PE but a lot of it depends if you like the sport you are doing or if you do very well on it. For example I am bad at football so therefore I don’t like it but I am reasonably good at netball so I love doing it. Despite this, it is good to get some fresh air now and then and PE is some nice exercise.

7diamond07 · 6 years ago

PE is what will stop you getting overweight and encouraging you to be more fit and active.

vegetarian · 6 years ago

i like gym because i do not do pe because i am home educated

epice4 · 6 years ago

I really enjoy P.E. because it is a chance to try out new and exciting activities and sports. You may end up really liking something you do in P.E. and you might take it up as a club or a hobby. Lots of children nowadays are inactive which can make them unfit and unwell. In my school, we do two and a half hours of P.E. a week as part of our curriculum. All of my teachers have been sporty and they make us work hard, but this is all for our well being. As a result, my school is usually top in sporting events like running, football and netball. Our hard work and commitment is always worth it.

tjbanter · 6 years ago

aryshah · 6 years ago

Who doesn’t like gymanastics

aryshah · 6 years ago

!!!!??

marla_cat · 6 years ago

I think it just depends on whether you actually like sport, and if your teacher is nice or not. I really like P.E and if your good people don't complain that you can't do it

marla_cat · 6 years ago

also when the teachers do picking teams its like a popularity contest, and its not really fair or fun. You just end up feeling bad but I love P.E because we don't do that and have nice teachers and even if you don't like sport everyone is made to try, so you can still exercise. I LOVE P.E

flufypanda · 6 years ago

Love PE it is fun I like archery ,grass sledging , tennis, athletics, football, rounders and loads more

moojingles · 6 years ago

No because I have dyspraxia and don't find that the PE staff are understanding.

gr8ape10 · 6 years ago

Some people get bullied if others are not good at sport so they should be equal

uniquepika · 6 years ago

I understand that P.E is important but I personally don’t like it.

Who is dosen’t like PE

melon_cow7 · 6 years ago

i always look forward to PE most of the time.... especially football. But when we do cross country i REALLY DONT LOOK FORWARD TO IT! I really enjoy playing football, rounders and sprinting. I think my school does well at PE lessons but i think that they could offer more after school sports clubs as they are all at lunch times.

melon_cow7 · 6 years ago

I LOVE PE! ESPECIALLY FOOTBALL AND SPRINTING AND ROUNDERS! I do think that my school could offer more after school sports clubs though...

fluffy1cat · 6 years ago

Our Pe teacher ignores most things and we have a really fussy girl who gets upset and tells everyone off for not doing things her way. Also people talk about it being not their favourite sport and in the end only 3 or 4 people are playing.

bobalob · 6 years ago

I do love P.E because we learn different skills each time but if we are struggling then we keep doing the same lessons.

poppypapa · 6 years ago

I love PE because you can get active and it is good fun
??‍♀️

flossingg · 6 years ago

I get tired.

jp11_2006 · 6 years ago

Yes it's a brilliant way of getting active and competitive with friends which is really important because if you don't then you won't feel good and it could lead to obesity.

molly67 · 6 years ago

Yes, I like PE becuase its a way to exercise with friends and have fun while doing it.

daipal · 6 years ago

I love PE and you're not inside doing maths!

bigfatcat · 6 years ago

P.E is fun for those who make it fun and even if they don’t like it, still be positive but if you are negative about it ten of course you are going to find it boring. Give it a go and if you don’t do as well as others, you will know that you’ve tried your best. Also it’s good for your health and well-being!

brownie12 · 6 years ago

Lots of people are saying how its the kids who are good at PE who like it but I am not one of the best or particularly amazing yet I still enjoy it. Though you might not enjoy it you've got to keep fit and be active and the truth is you don't you will end up really unhealthy and unfit. Personally I don't feel PE teachers need more training as really what will be the benrfits . More fun lessons , help? It is very simple you've got to do the work no matter who you are and if you think your not good at sports or you think your bodies not capable, None of this is ever going to change unless you change your negative attitude.

meadwaym · 6 years ago

I love PE but that is because my teachers push us to the best of our abilities. In primary school, the teachers weren't as enthusiastic. I see both points of view though.

smile2424 · 6 years ago

I don’t like getting changed but I do this pe apart from getting sweaty and stinky, but I wouldn’t want to shower at school so I think they should make pe the last lesson so you can go home straight away and shower

chickenone · 6 years ago

Its fun even if your not very good at it

mrmilo · 6 years ago

I love PE it is a fun way for children to get active and get involved and it's not about your personality you can just get in there and show of your team spirit.

catsam435 · 6 years ago

YEA DUH ? WHO dosen’t.

If they don’t that’s ????? and???and???and is??

tc-764350 · 6 years ago

I LOVE!!!!!! PE!

flyingjo · 6 years ago

No- I agree it gets your brain active, but I don't understand how doing table-tennis or volley-ball is going to help us in everyday life unless that's what you want your job to be.

elephant_m · 6 years ago

I don't like P.E because my teachers push us really hard, especially me because I have a phobia of balls. I find it really hard to blend in and I dread P.E because I am also scared that people will bully me too. It's just a chain effect.

sacagawea_ · 6 years ago

I don’t like PE because in class, if you were doing a spelling bee in teams, and you shouted at someone in your team for getting one wrong, you would get in trouble, but outside (in my school) the sportier kids seem to think that they can shout at all of the less sporty and more academic kids, and they won’t get in trouble. I think this unfair because they make people who aren’t the fastest runner of the farest thrower feel bad about themselves, and then they feel like they are being mocked so don’t have the courage to try harder in pe class. I think that pe teachers should pay more attention, and the people who like sports should try to understand that it isn’t for everyone, and how would they feel if they got yelled at whenever they got a maths question wrong?

ballet2006 · 6 years ago

I love it

bugs1012 · 6 years ago

i dont because i never make teams and people get faviorited

molly67 · 6 years ago

Yes because its a way of exercising , the fun way with all of your friends. And who knows you might enjoy it!

booklover4 · 6 years ago

I don't know because sometimes it can be fun but sometimes it is really boring, when you do gymnastics it is not very fun because I'm not at all flexible. Though Dance is good ,especially with ribbon dances
??

xxowlxx · 6 years ago

No, despite it being a way to get active, most teachers are either sexist or have favourites. As a short girl who can’t run that fast, my hockey teacher hardly pays attention to me and if you don’t run that fast, you OBVIOUSLY aren’t going to be decent at anything. ( That was sarcastic. ) I used to swim four days a week and the teachers there, despite being fairly good, made me miserable and I lost lots of my self confidence. I do think PE should be kept in the national curriculum though.

xxowlxx · 6 years ago

Some teachers can make you happy with constructive criticsm, instead of shouting or ignoring.

architshar · 6 years ago

i agree with rabitman (second comment)

llamatoast · 6 years ago

Yes but I would like it more more if they taught us hockey!!!

melon_cow7 · 6 years ago

Yes because it keeps you fit

jedigeorge · 6 years ago

PE is one of the best lessons ever, everyone knows that!!!

celtic10 · 6 years ago

I think P.E is brilliant ⚽️

ekerosberg · 6 years ago

Our school says no to football.we only get to play once a week.???????????????☹️?

stargrl · 5 years ago

I like the exercise, at least most of them. But my classmates can be very aggressive. People make excuses to not be there, and it makes me feel useless. Also they let you pick teams and everyone thinks I'm no good at PE. The thing is, how am I going to get better if I don't know how to do PE? It makes me feel more like nothing then a person. 😢

tennis22 · 4 years ago

My P.E. teacher used to be terrible and only paid attention to the kids that were good at sport. So I wasn’t very happy about P.E. then but now our teacher is much better.
I still don't like it but I feel better about going into it
