HOW would you feel about swapping your iPad for a chalkboard?
New research by the Education Endowment Foundation suggests that good old-fashioned chalk could be the way forward in classrooms.
A study of 25,000 pupils in 140 schools has found that using mini-blackboards and chalk can help young people to learn faster.
GCSE pupils saw their learning progress by a whole two months when they were asked to answer questions on chalkboards and hold the answers up.
The method also meant pupils were able to get instant feedback, so they knew if they’d got the answer right or wrong straight away. This saved the teacher time, too, as they didn’t have to take tests away to mark.
Chalk boards used to be very popular in Victorian times, so is it time we brought them back? Let us know in this week’s poll! (The First News iHub already gives instant feedback, so our subscribing schools won’t need chalk!)

I think we should
Many students don't concentrate while looking at the interactive board
But as study's have shown it helps the children and adults in different ways
I agree with using chalk but isn't that an unrenewable fuel so if we run out well have to use interactive boards again
spandolie · 6 years ago
i think that we should keep digital devices because it is a lot quicker to write things on the white board and put what you need to write down or anything to do but white boards are actually quite fun
shpee · 6 years ago
No. There are apps on digital devices that do the same thing, and I don't see why it should be chalk and a black board, when you can just use a small whiteboard and board pen, which would be much better and easier? So no, I think it's a stupid idea.
someguy501 · 6 years ago
We shouldn't use backboards as it is really hard and messy to use them but replacing electronics with mini whiteboards and board markers would be a good idea
abanaza- · 6 years ago
Yes, because digital devices affect childrens concentration, but chalkboards don't so children are more likely to learn and study better using chalkboards.
darjap · 6 years ago
I don't agree that digital devices should be replaced with chalk boards since it would make it both harder for students and teachers to learn or teach because teaches would have to right all the tasks and work out themselves and for some students it may be hard to read.

I think we should ban interactive boards as children may sneak into classrooms and meddle with the boards.
Meanwhile on chalk boards you can't meddle.

Why would you ditch iPads? If i was using a chalkboard, I would feel old fashioned.
ananyaa21 · 6 years ago
I think we should get chalk boards back because, when the power fails, interactive boards can't be used, and chalk boards can be used all the time, and this way, we are saving electricity.

NEVER!Mum wouldn’t exchange her iPhone for a stupid blackboard because she’d have to use my iPad and I would never have a go on the iPad.
apple92 · 6 years ago
It’s studies not study’s.
icestarz · 6 years ago
I think it would be better to have a blackboard because then you could also practice handwriting but with some digital devices, you can't practice handwriting.
titmouse · 6 years ago
Not chalkboards, but whiteboards would be fine (and you could practice your handwriting!)
rollersk8t · 6 years ago
I don't think that we should ditch our electronics because if we are needing to use chalk, the storage could run out and we would spend more on boxes of chalk. Also, if we just ditch our electronics, we would have wasted loads of money on them even if they stop us from going outside.
rollersk8t · 6 years ago
Also, whiteboards are cool because you can use things like powerpoints and google. The teacher can't exactly whip out her/his phone to search something up.
drummercmd · 6 years ago
Yes!
I think it's a great idea because one: it's a good idea to reduce screen time, and two: I think it could bring more concentration to students.
stargalaxy · 6 years ago
No.You can show small things i be it bigger in them.
hp_queen · 6 years ago
Yes I think we should because many children spend too much time on electronics at home so we can cut down on it at school!
cmi_hall1 · 6 years ago
No because chalk can get messy, I think it is old fashioned and you could use white boards to hold things up. Also teachers can plan lessons ahead on interactive white boards.
ZENCE40 · 6 years ago
I'm struggling to decide. On the one hand, digital boards are more convenient and easy to use, on the other hand, chalk boards are probably better for our brains. I think I'd say that our world is changing and we need to get used to technology so digital boards are fine. Wait -- but what about global warming? hmmmm I'm not sure...
trumpetboy · 6 years ago
I think we should ditch digital devices as they always fail and with a chalk board the teacher can find out the classes answers instantly
equality4 · 6 years ago
Schools with less money will be able to afford Black boards, meaning education will be cheaper and more accessible!
ravenclaw1 · 6 years ago
I say no. Though chalk is a good idea, interactive whiteboards are more useful.
galactic12 · 6 years ago
I think it is a great idea! In my school we have whiteboards which is great but people always draw on them when the teachers aren't looking. I can't imagine them drawing on a chalkboard though. One problem is that chalk runs out quick so you will have to keep buying and refilling rather than with a whiteboard you only need to replace the pens every so often.
lionbear · 6 years ago
I don’t think we should go back to chalk boards because when your writing they might make a really annoying noise and it would distract everyone
5honypony · 6 years ago
No because a digital smart board does more than a chalk boards, making children get better education. I think we should have both!
castlestar · 6 years ago
No, because digital services can be used to do more things. All you can do with a chalkboard is write on it. Also, digital services can do what chalkboards do but better, in my school we have an app that you can answer questions on and it tells you if you are wrong or right immediately.
gracey_xx · 6 years ago
Yes! If you learn on a digital device, you could get distracted and start doing something entirely different to what you planned, however with chalkboards you can stay focused on your goal as their is nothing else to do on it.
claudine · 6 years ago
If we use chalkboards then we wouldn't be able to look back at our work for revision, which isn't helpful.
hass8 · 6 years ago
We should not do that as first this is not efficient and will be expensive for schools. And marker board is something cheap and good to use even though many school use that. And also chalk boards were a things of the past, in our era we use technology to help us!
Nam123 · 6 years ago
Digitals have more information, more durable and are quicker to use. Technology should be our strength, not weakness.

I do not see why we should switch digital devices to chalkboards because what is the difference? In my opinion, and probably almost everyone will agree, interactive whiteboards are really not different to chalkboards. In our class, we have lights behind the interactive whiteboard which look beautiful in the dark if you light it up. If it is behind a plain old chalkboard, there is a chance that nearly nobody will like it. Once again I do not think we should switch digital devices to ‘no fun’ chalkboards.
P.S:I do also think that it would provide more convenience for the teachers as well because if a pupil does not know a word and the teacher finds it hard to explain that word, he/she can search the word on google. It is probably better for everyone else too!!!?
my_life · 6 years ago
No, we shouldn’t because electronic devices are really helpful to students and teachers these days, and I don’t think teachers would like to pay for chalks each month and chalks makes everywhere ( especially your hands ) dirty.
ros89 · 6 years ago
I think they should try diching electronic items for some time and then give them back and always keep the old blackboards
snufflypug · 6 years ago
I think we should because don’t children get enough screen time already??
ninjahiro · 6 years ago
I think we shouldn't ditch them because there are apps that help it keeps younger kids entertained while they are learning and chalk wears off faster and younger kids would just draw things not what they are meant to learn.
cherrybomb · 6 years ago
I think we should because,
kids don't concentrate as well if they are looking at an interactive board and there are less distractions on a chalkboard
agentlord · 6 years ago
i think we should keep 'em
dogsrock16 · 6 years ago
I think it would be good to have chalkboards because then you can get better grades and you can concentrate better
shreddeddo · 6 years ago
kids will get bored if they use chalk boards
joe_kelly · 6 years ago
No because if the teachers said let's look at a movie, video clip of a PowerPoint ect were is that in the space going to happen plus they have spent thousands of pounds for one so it's an from me
bellebeast · 6 years ago
I don't think we should because what about if no one knew an answer for a hard question and we don't have any Google to help us only a chalkboard that does nothing and then no one would know
jammie_123 · 6 years ago
I don’t think we should trade chalkboards for digital devices because teachers can explain certain subjects and demonstrate them better with computers; using applications such as PowerPoint and Notebook.

No because well...
flyingjo · 6 years ago
I voted yes, because we don't use iPads and I actually enjoy using chalk boards
draco · 6 years ago
no because what if they need to read it out to the class and they can't read their writing because it looks gritty and there are smudges on blackboard sothe writing will smudge if they're not careful
xx_puppys · 6 years ago
My reasoning behind my answer as 'YES':
Due to the fact we are currently in the 21st century I believe that using the technology given is great! And to use chalk boards would mean allergies will grow and it will be harder to clean boards! It is also a lot more efficient to use this device so work will be done quicker and it will be harder for children to see there ,maybe, future (the online world).
marla_cat · 6 years ago
Kind of in the middle, chalk can get messy and electronice devices are easier for writing. Chalk boards would help poorer schools, so in some lessons it could be useful, but I think if you are writing storys and things like that devices are better
mimpi123 · 6 years ago
you cant do as much on a chalkboard and it makes a horrible noise.
mimpi123 · 6 years ago

con-con · 6 years ago
No because It’s tricky to right on a chalkboard and it is very messy but on electronic devices it is easier and cleaner
brownie12 · 6 years ago
We should use smart boards because you can write on it normally like with chalk boerds without typing (you also can if you want to) and you can use it as a normal computer
lcflogan · 6 years ago
I think we should as many students, I have found, get distracted when given the opportunity to use iPads or other electronic devices. I think technology should be introduced into schools, as students can engage more with the learning- they are used to it. Chalkboards are a good way for students to concentrate as there are no interruptions for them to be distracted by. At my school, the students use iPads; I will consider talking to our board of student council to see if they can fund for these resources.
sootysweep · 6 years ago
we should start to use chalk boards. It is better for children, because technology is bad for you. People will concentrate better.
sootysweep · 6 years ago
also, Sometimes the interactive whiteboard freezes or the website does not work and you can't do the lesson.
natalija · 6 years ago
Yes because chalkboards are the classical way of writing things down and many children are distracted when the teacher uses an interactive whiteboard.
daipal · 6 years ago
Keep them so we can look at PowerPoints and have interactive lessons!
tesarous · 6 years ago
I think we should not ditch interactive whiteboards as that would be putting us back in time as we developed a new form of teaching and then we will just throw all that out of the window and go back to using chalk and blackboards.
tesarous · 6 years ago
Also when teachers inhale the chalk it puts their health at risk and that would not be good if all our teachers were developing lung problems because of inhaling chalk.

In my opinion, it's really fun to use a chalkboard. I mean, in stories they sound like they are scary because of the nails scratching the chalkboard thing. But actually, as I said, it's pretty fun! It will give your eyes a rest and plus if your iPad is slow like snail mail- a chalkboard isn't. It doesn't need wifi or anything! Just chalk and a chalkboard rubber!
Sneaky · 6 years ago
Why would we need to swap them? Digital devices is part of everyday life. You also can’t do interactive things or games.

as its a lot quicker and tidier

They should have an interactive whiteboards and chalk or white boards. Then children can demonstrate ideas.

Black boards are old school. Plus, I hate the sound
munchie26 · 6 years ago
Why Swap them since theyre gonna have to pay for new blackboards when weve already got a way cooler tyhing than a damn blackboard
bobalob · 6 years ago
Yes, because it's easier it's also like a massive computer where you can do power points and watch videos to learn plus you can also do the same stuff as a chalkboard where you can get the pen tool and write on it and you can choose squares when you are doing maths.
RoseBun · 6 years ago
Chalk makes your hand feel funny so I don't really like it. However, I would be happy to switch a digital device for a white board.
essy101 · 6 years ago
It is easier to use a smart board so you can get hold of certain information.
jedigeorge · 6 years ago
no, you can do lots more on ipads and phones than you can on a chalkboard. We've got them now, why replace them, it took ages to make them. The answer is no peeps!
trudie · 5 years ago
No! Tablets computers and other digital devices help students learn because I know it might distract them but they can switch the digital device off to listen to the teacher. You can save work on there that you've done and I know an app called showbie it's an app where your teacher can show you work without printing it out.
katkid10 · 5 years ago
It depends if people are allergic to chalk or not...
