THE United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, António Guterres, has spoken out against the huge amounts of money being made by the big energy companies.
Reports show that global oil and gas companies are continuing to make record profits as prices skyrocket for household bill payers. Guterres said that it was “immoral” for
the companies to make such huge amounts of money while the poorest are struggling to survive.
The war in Ukraine has forced up oil and gas prices because Russia has begun to limit fuel supply to Europe and around the world. Energy companies are passing much of their increased cost of buying fuel to ordinary consumers.
This is causing a cost of living crisis in many parts of the world, including the UK, where paying more for energy means less for food and other family bills.
Many are being pushed into poverty.
The UN chief has asked governments to tax the energy companies’ profits and use the money to help those who can’t manage. He also asked for more money to be spent on renewable energy supplies.

I’ve lived in Kuwait for 3 years. There they make all their money from oil - people don’t pay tax, but Kuwaitis (people from Kuwait) get money from the government simply just for living. Meanwhile, some expats (people from other countries) live off 1KD (£2.50) a day. I believe this is completely unfair, and the government is greedy for making so much money from oil.
