Should all 16 and 17 year olds in the UK be given the right to vote?

Polls

31st January 2018

SOON, 16 and 17-year-olds will be able to vote in local elections in Wales.

Right now, you have to be 18 or over to vote in local council elections in Wales, England and Northern Ireland.

Now, the Welsh Labour Government says it will allow young people aged 16 and 17 to vote in local council elections in Wales. This will come into effect by the year 2022.

The changes in Wales would only apply to local council elections; 16 and 17-year-olds still wouldn’t be allowed to vote in General Elections or Welsh Assembly elections.

The Welsh Government hopes that the move will help get more young people interested and engaged in politics.

Scotland gave over-16s the vote back in 2014, and now, with Wales following suit, many people think the rest of the UK (England and Northern Ireland) should do the same.

The subject has been discussed in the House of Commons in London in the past (and in First News!), but there are no plans to debate the idea again in the near future.

Should all 16 and 17 year olds in the UK be given the right to vote?

I think everyone has the right to vote starting at an earlier age so yes

Put bellow if u agree??⛑????

7diamond07 · 6 years ago

I think yes because young people have the modern world on their fingertips, and some elderly might not know what’s happening in the country as much as youth.

gingetoff · 6 years ago

I think we should be able to vote.

Why not? It’s an opportunity to change decisions. Go Wales ???????

shpee · 6 years ago

I think so, yes. I think it's kind of stupid that the government (basically) deems 16 year olds to be responsible enough to have children but not to vote.

fg-14 · 6 years ago

I don't think they should because they don't have enough experience and voting is very important so i voted no.

bunnygirl2 · 6 years ago

No!
They might not be sensible and joke around with it

mcmonkey · 6 years ago

I think that maybe young voters might vote silly or not use their correctly. I think no-they should wait until they're 18

elise2006 · 6 years ago

It is alright to vote at a young age because you are the future generation. The things that happen now will affect what happens in the future so young people should have a say.

bobcats · 6 years ago

I think that people at the age of 16 and 17 should be able to vote in all elections because I think that they are old enough to understand politics.

Bobbox · 6 years ago

Yes because it’s children’s futures

EFC · 6 years ago

I say yes

i_care · 6 years ago

Yes, we are the future, we are the next generation and wouldn’t it be ridiculous if we could not have a say in what will effect OUR lives not other generations?

joep101 · 6 years ago

How come sixteen year olds can join the armed forces but not have the right to vote? Many people think that young people are ruff and rude; that is WRONG! First news show that, if sixteen and seventeen year olds could vote, the world - in my opinion - would be a better place. When First News did its own Brexit referendum, the young people voted REMAIN. If young people could be able to vote, the UK would not be spending more money on getting out of the EU than the NHS

fox64 · 6 years ago

I voted no, although I only put that because some people that age aren't as responsible.

fox64 · 6 years ago

But, on second thoughts, I would quite like to have a vote right now.

pokeball1 · 6 years ago

I think they should get a vote so that everyone can get to vote.

f1donut · 6 years ago

If they are responsible enough, I guess so.

frederico · 6 years ago

I don't think it's a very good idea to let children vote at 16 because although "everyone has the write to vote" many 16 and 17 year olds don't know what's best for them. We should be concentrating on more important issues. Sorry if you don't agree with me! : )

dude28899 · 6 years ago

yes I wanna VOTE my OPINION COUNTS as well as everyone else

scootz · 6 years ago

I think that 16 and 17 year olds should have the right to vote because lets think about it. They are starting to go into the real world and they should know stuff about politics without them agreeing with their parents

queenfirst · 6 years ago

i think only adults should vote because there can be some really stupid teenagers out there and they can write really bad things about the voting stuff

BluePanda · 6 years ago

Yes, because 16 year olds should have a right to vote as most things which adults vote for will affect us when we are adults.

hoozles11 · 6 years ago

Usually, 16 and 17 year olds have a mature mind and are able to think for themselves and make their own decisions.

emma2163 · 6 years ago

No I think that 16 and 17 year olds should not be aloud to vote because turning 18 is something amazing and that you should only be allowed to access those privileges at 18??

sapkling · 6 years ago

I think no because voting is very important and some 16 year mess about or parents could get a chance to tell the government what they think about there 16 years olds getting to vote so I say no

unicornzz · 6 years ago

Yes because when you're 16 or 17 year old (I think) you're old enough to vote and you'll know about politics.

issylouis9 · 6 years ago

I think no because you may not choose the right choice if you are younger because your brain hasn’t properly matured into an adult.

dork · 6 years ago

YEAH

pony · 6 years ago

Yes, they need to learn how to make some decisions by themselves.

kestj003.3 · 6 years ago

16 or 17 is quite young and some people are still can be very immature and could do ridiculous things no offence if anybody reading this is considered that

kgrewal · 6 years ago

Younger children might make rash decisions which will affect the country's politics.

emperor · 6 years ago

YOUNG PEOPLE SHOULD VOTE! I don’t need to list the many reasons because most are obvious. And we are the future of the world. I've said my piece.

pheebz10 · 6 years ago

I think yes because the children should know ad understand a lot about what is happening so if they understand then why should the not be able to vote like everyone else

loading795 · 6 years ago

I wasn’t entirely sure for this one cos 16-17 year olds don’t always understand the political stuff and might ruin what should be right for our country!

pusheen9 · 6 years ago

we all should be able to vote

doris16 · 6 years ago

I think 16-17s should be allowed to vote in the UK because we have the right to know about our country, therefore the right to help the government make the right choices for our country, and have the right to vote. Whenever there is a vote, the end result will impact our future and England, so we have a right to say our opinion.

gamer07 · 6 years ago

YA??????

gamer07 · 6 years ago

YES soggynado

mbmr · 6 years ago

yes as it is there future that it effects.

bubblyball · 6 years ago

No. Younger people could think they are allowed to vote and it could lead to distress and confusion.

netbalover · 6 years ago

We need freedom

netbalover · 6 years ago

We need the freedom to decide who will be our leader

astro_girl · 6 years ago

I think yes because it is going to be their world and the young people will have to live with the consequences

epicvader · 6 years ago

Even if they are just following their parent's views, it is a step towards bigger responsibility, so yes.

mollyboo8 · 6 years ago

I mean, why not?

bobsjam · 6 years ago

I think it is fair for us the future generation to vote???????????

allertons · 6 years ago

@Soggynando I agree

unicorn3 · 6 years ago

No, because some would just be copying their friends.

amberspell · 6 years ago

I put yes because I think 16 is old enough to decide stuff about what happens in your life.

greenboy7 · 6 years ago

i don't think all 16 and 17 year olds should vote but some.

rokith · 6 years ago

16 and 17 year old should be allowed to vote despite the fact that some people have a clear lack of interest in politics. That's their fault but for the people who care about the future of the UK wants to make a difference in society. Let me give you a logic; at the age of sixteen, you're allowed to marry, pay taxes and leave home. Therefore you're deemed old enough to vote.
One of the major problems with 16 and 17 year old is Apathy and we often get it quite a lot. Most of the day, we would be: playing a football, having a chat with your friends or even watching your favourite shows nevertheless shouldn't we engage more with the outside world and grab the opportunity to vote. If you think it through, if we have more sixteen-year-old, chances are there would be more voices of citizens in the UK.

frogo45 · 6 years ago

it is our lives that are going to be effected by the voting so why cant we vote?

superspy11 · 6 years ago

Of course they should! Everyone should have the right to vote for their leader, especially if it's for the next five years.

hobbes123 · 6 years ago

Yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

donutlove · 6 years ago

YES!!! I think it's unfair as it is. CHILDREN HAVE OPINIONS PEOPLE!!!!! I have wanted to vote since I was really young. You should be able to vote from seven! I have an opinion however young I may be and it's a perfectly fine one as well.

izzy_xxxxx · 6 years ago

At 16: We can join the army. We can pay taxes. But we can't vote?

Magic10 · 6 years ago

No, the thing is, there are plenty of mature 16 and 17 year olds out there who should be perfectly eligible to vote, but there are also immature 16 and 17 year olds. You either let them all vote, or not vote at all. So it’s a difficult one, but I’m going for no.

holholster · 6 years ago

I think that 16 and 17 year olds should be given the right to vote, because everyone should get a say in who rules their council.

nostrils · 6 years ago

I think they should have 16+ but under 60

sootysweep · 6 years ago

Yes! By 16 and 17 you are already really grown up and you can make decisions for yourself.

jedigeorge · 5 years ago

I don't see why not

trudie · 4 years ago

Of course there old enough why not?

redrubyguy · 4 years ago

No, they are too young. But I do not really care, anyway. I am not Welsh, I am English. The United Kingdom should disband.
