Do you think you should learn about the climate crisis at school?

THE UK’s education unions have written to Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi calling for urgent action on the climate crisis.

The four unions (NASUWT, NEU, UCU and UNISON), which represent teachers, school staff and workers across the UK, say that as the host country of the COP26 UN climate conference, it’s important for the UK to lead by example.

They say that the UK’s education system needs to undergo big changes, because climate change requires an emergency response.

These changes include a complete “review of the entire curriculum, so that it is preparing and mobilising our whole society for a sustainable future”.

That could mean having lessons about the climate emergency and ecological crisis, how they are caused and what our future lives and jobs might look like. It could also mean green skills being taught on vocational courses for older students.

In the letter, the unions also call for a plan to completely decarbonise the UK’s schools by 2030, and a policy for helping students, staff and parents get to school in an eco-friendly way.

Dr Mary Bousted, Joint General Secretary of the National Education Union, said: “It is the next generation that will bear the brunt of any inaction on climate change.”

“We all need to play a part in ensuring a sustainable future for our young people. Schools and colleges can play their part, and the UK Government needs to ensure that quality climate change education is embedded across the curriculum, as well as focusing on decarbonising the education estate by 2031.”

I think it’s important to learn about what’s going on in the world. Because every voice counts.

We have learnt about it in school and it was quite helpfull but that was 3 years ago and my school never really talks about it now. I think it would be great if we could learn more about it because then we would know How to stop Carbon emmisions earlier.

children need to learn about it from a young age so that they can make their own decisions about the situation and how they can help

ivansp2011 · 2 years ago

I think we should as it is a major problem in our environment and we have a right to learn about it. Furthermore, children might be able to do something about it.

I think we should so children can tell their families how not to contribute towards climate change. Also, children that have never experienced it can learn about it and its problems.

Yes, we should learn about the climate crisis to understand the affect on our planet and find ways to stop it.

mwhitty · 2 years ago

It’s an important subject that everyone should know about. You never know?

katkid10 · 2 years ago

I think that we should learn more about it. Most people are aware of it but not everyone knows that much about it. We would also do a lot more for the environment if all of us knew about it as we are growing into this world.

babsbunny · 2 years ago

Of course, because otherwise you are going to grow up having heard of it but not really knowing what it is and we are the generation it will affect the most.

weirdcat · 2 years ago

Of course we should be taught about this! There's a climate crisis and we're just going to go on with normal life?

weirdcat · 2 years ago

*well.. that's kinda what the government is doing.

mothstar · 2 years ago

Definitely, because it will help young people to be more aware of what the future might be which means we might have a more hopeful future.

puddingfan · 2 years ago

I think that we should definitely learn about the climate crisis at school because I don’t think that it is highlighted enough in the school curriculum even though it is a really important subject.

Yes because it is very important

pringle12 · 2 years ago

It is really important. Things are getting so serious, we need to learn how to help

charlieee7 · 2 years ago

Yes. Climate change is a big issue, affecting us all right now. Action needs to be taken to save our planet, and the best way to do this is through education. Our generation is going to be majorly affected. We need to know what to do and change our ways now, not just ignore this issue.

meridabear · 2 years ago

We already learnt about climate change in our school and I think that other schools should do it too. Everybody who knows about it about it and helps makes a difference, because everybody needs to play their part and you can't play your part if you don't even know about it!

f1racer · 2 years ago
