SHOPPERS in Britain are set to buy 50 million summer outfits that will only be used once, so a charity is urging people to think of the planet and buy second-hand clothes instead.
A survey for Barnardo’s found that most outfits are bought for holidays, although people spend more money overall on clothes for weddings. The charity says that shoppers will splash out on 50.38m single-use outfits this summer, worth a total of £2.77bn.
The low price of some clothes means that many people think it’s okay to wear something only once, then chuck it in the bin. But campaigners are starting to fight back against ‘fast fashion’, by warning people how damaging it is. It takes a lot of resources to make clothes, but it is also bad for the environment to send waste to landfill sites.
Some critics blame social media, especially Instagram and Facebook, for making people think they need to constantly update their wardrobe. The Barnardo’s survey shows that 37% of 16 to 24-year-olds would be embarrassed to wear an outfit to a special occasion more than once, but that drops to just 12% for over-55s, who are less likely to use social media.
As well as being better for the environment, buying second-hand clothes can help charities like Barnardo’s to raise money, so it’s a double win!

Yes! It saves the environment and as long as the second hand things are clean and not broken, why not?

It’s better for the environment. Did you know that in WW2 people used curtains to fix clothes,as clothes were in short supply.

Yes I do wear second hand clothes. I find it a lot of fun searching around different shops never knowing what I might find. I’ve got lots of designer clothes at a fraction of the price. It also helps the charities so I always donate my clothes to them, especially my local hospice charity shop. Also, it is good for the environment.

I don't buy second-hand clothes but, I wouldn't have a problem doing so. I have never bought an outfit and only worn it once though.

Yes because they’re not dirty or anything like that! They’re clean and they’re the same as the clothes you buy in primark or peacocks. They’ve just been worn by other people but they’ve been cleaned

Buying second hand clothes is a great way to help the environment and you can find some really hood stuff much cheaper than in the shops. I have many clothes second hand from my cousins and second hand shops.

Why not? It's cheaper, it saves the planet and it's just the same quality as the store-bought stuff. Most of the time...

I do because otherwise you can sometimes waste your clothes but with second hand, other people have worn it and its not a waste.

I don't normally buy 2nd hand clothes but whenever my clothes get too small they either go to one of many cousins or a charity shop.

If they are good quality and clean, the i see no problem with buying second hand clothes. I also happily wear my older sister’s and older cousin’s old clothes.

I have a lot of second hand clothes. We basically just pass around a bag of them in my home education group.
