Is banning designer coats a good way to make kids feel more equal?

A SCHOOL in Merseyside is to ban pupils from wearing designer coats. The ban will be put in place at Woodchurch High School in Birkenhead, to help tackle poverty-shaming.

This is when children feel less good, or are bullied because they can’t afford the same things as other kids at school. Coats from expensive brands such as Canada Goose, Moncler and Pyrenex won’t be allowed after the Christmas holidays.

The head teacher of the school, Rebekah Phillips, said parents have supported the ban. Some people on social media have called it a step too far, though. We’d love to know what you think!

Is banning designer coats a good way to make kids feel more equal?

No, some children’s parents will work so hard to buy them their favourite coat and now their children are not allowed to wear it to school. That is not fair. There are other ways to make school children feel equal, this is not the right way.

Definately coz what about all the poor people? How do uthink they would feel?? YES IT IS A GOOD IDEA!!! ?

mrfrosty · 5 years ago

It is a good idea because if someone has a really expensive coat on it could make you feel left out so if they banned designer coats people would feel less left out and it wouldn't stand out how much money they have got .

ceejay101 · 5 years ago

By banning designer coats at schools, children are less likely to be bullied because there will not be price differences in what children wear.

mhkmal · 5 years ago

I think yes, because when you are at school and if you see other people wearing designer clothes and you don't you will feel left out and it will remind you that you can't get that type of clothing.

welovenews · 5 years ago

I think yes because there would be one less thing to be bullied about at school

Designer coats should not be banned because a child should be able to wear what they want to wear. It doesn’t matter if your wearing a designer coat or rags! We are all EQUAL

bigbouille · 5 years ago

NO! What if you just bought a new coat and now you can't wear it? That would be a waste of money.

dancemunch · 5 years ago

I think it is a good idea because then other children won't feel like what they're wearing isn't good enough

gingerfrek · 5 years ago

I don't think banning designer coats is the right choice- the teachers should be talking to the bullies and see what's going on, not just ban something, as if you do that they're going to find something else to bullies about

annitdm15 · 5 years ago

I think that this is a bit too much because even though people are living in poverty and may not have enough money for a designer coat, not everyone in one school could each have a designer coat,so why the need to ban designer coats?

hockey.xx · 5 years ago

I think that designer coats should still exist in schools because if people only have one coat they can use it and if people don’t have a designer coat and have their own coat which is cheaper then wear that one and don’t change your style of clothes just because everyone else has a different one.?

xxowlxx · 5 years ago

No! What will come next? Expensive pencils? I don’t think it’s a good idea because coats are only bits of cloth with some zips on it. They aren’t going to make a difference.

xxowlxx · 5 years ago

You can get cheaper coats that look the same too.

yumyum2008 · 5 years ago

Yes, because not everybody can afford such nice coats and they are being treated badly because of it. If children can’t be nice to others because of how wealthy their parents are, then bans like this must be put in place.

spacewoman · 5 years ago

I understand that it might make kids feel more equal, but the kids with designer coats will have to buy another coat, which would still be expensive, and therefore a waste of money. Also, it would be a waste of clothing if all schoolchildren had to buy another coat, as you can’t wear two coats at once!

catonclan · 5 years ago

If a kid has a designer coat their parents have paid a lot of money for them to wear that coat.

ad72_456 · 5 years ago

I think banning designer coats is a good idea because if people went around showing their jackets to everyone, those who couldn't afford them wouldn't feel like they didn't belong there because they would be the only ones without designer jackets.

ad72_456 · 5 years ago

If people went round showing their designer coats to everyone, those who didn't have them would feel out of place because they just can't afford the same standard things as others.

Yes! I think it would make people feel more equal because it doesn't show if someone thinks they are more important or has more money than everyone else.

natalija · 5 years ago

I think that it is quite a good idea but there is a chance that some children are not getting bullied exactly because of their coats.

habbot07 · 5 years ago

If anyone bans designer coats kids would feel more equal even if the children aren't happy with this ban it would make some other children happier.I am a child and I would be happier with this ban even if I can't wear some of my coats to school.

3629 · 5 years ago

I think it's taking it too far because lots of people express themselves by the clothes they wear and also the kids who can't afford or want would be picked on as the others might view it as their fault

3629 · 5 years ago

I think it's taking it too far as lots of kids take pride in their outfits and would be angry at the kids who they might think faults it was which would cause bullying, therefore not making kids feel equal

loveeslime · 5 years ago

No, because it doesn't make what kind of coat you have equal and if anyone does have a problem with other people wearing designer coats then they should just then someone needs to tell them it doesn't make you equal just because of designer coats.

seaparrot · 5 years ago

As children should be aloud to wear what they want also they would think that they just banned designer coats to make them equal and they would think it’s because of them.

shpee · 5 years ago

No, because then the people who have them will have to buy another one. Also, if anyone will get bullied, it will probably be the people with the expensive coat because they bought a coat for hundreds if not thousands of pounds (which I think is rather stupid, honestly).

djl5 · 5 years ago

Having designer coats doesn't mean your rich. They could be hand downs or on offer in a shop. What you wear should not impact others.

xx_puppys · 5 years ago

Over my experiences at school wearing a designer coat makes other children feel awkward... in the end its like shoes.. e.t.c Wearing Nike shoes and someone else wearing non-branded shoes can make the non-branded shoe person left out.

jesusrules · 5 years ago

i do not feel it is a way to make people equal because if you had your designer coat banned then i feel like they might blame someone who isn't able to afford a designer coat, and say it is their fault. also, you may have a designer coat just to stop you getting bullied or to make you in the 'right' sort of group of people.

jesusrules · 5 years ago

they might also feel guilty because they are poor and they might blame themselves for that ban.

11plusgirl · 5 years ago

children will just talk about their designer coats that they have at home

RoseBun · 5 years ago

There are other things as well as coats and it wont be just that.
You can't ban everything.
People will have spent a lot of money on those coats and then they get banned and they are not allowed to wear them

jake-o-mat · 5 years ago

I think it's a good idea to ban designer coats because it make make others feel bad about their own clothing

flmango · 5 years ago

I think it's a good idea because it might make other kids feel bad about what they wear

ewb26 · 5 years ago

I don't think this is fair because people could be given a designer coat as a present, and the person who bought it could have worked very hard to get the money to buy it, and so banning them from wearing it wouldn't be fair on the person who worked hard for the money. In my school we are only allowed to wear coats outside, so we aren't wearing coats very much anyway.

dude28899 · 5 years ago

NO! Some parents have wasted their money to buy these designer coats and their children be able to wear them. Also you don't wear your coat all day so it isn't a big deal. Plus, some people might not wear designer coats. Teachers should deal with the kids that have been upset and the ones that make people upset differently. So no to the ban!

astro_girl · 5 years ago

I don't think this is a good idea as the kids should feel good about themselves without caring about what other people wear
Also bullies can find something else to bully about so they shouldn't ban everything

dotbaker · 5 years ago

Yes,this is a good idea because everyone would feel more equal and not feel like they were second best

Nam123 · 5 years ago

It is unfair to be compared to others visually, and can result to bullying

88unicorn · 5 years ago

No because kids should be allowed to wear what they want, but if people start bulling people for their clothes, it should be stopped immediately. There are other ways to stop bulling.

poppypapa · 5 years ago

I think it's a good idea

v_venkie · 5 years ago

Banning designer coats can make kids equal because if they see a perfect designer coat that they wanted, they will trouble their parents to buy one for them . Parents will say to them that they can't have one because it is so expensive to buy designer coats for children.
From Smrithi

tinyrolo · 5 years ago

No because kids should have the right to wear whatever they want, no matter how much it costs. Bullying shouldn't be allowed instead.

pinkiepie1 · 5 years ago

I think designer coats should be banned because they can make poorer children feel that they are less superior to the richer children.

sushipip · 5 years ago

Stopping kids from wearing designer clothes won't reduce bullying and make kids feel more equal. Bullies will find anything to bully someone about. Banning expensive clothes doesn't reduce bullying, it just avoids the main problem. Maybe instead of banning clothes, raise more awareness about bullying or practice mindfulness in schools... This idea doesn't help anyone.

Umbrella4 · 5 years ago

Yes, it would just be selfish to show off that you to show off that you have something that others don’t. It can make some people feel very down.

elephant_1 · 5 years ago

I think that by banning designer coats, it gives children a better chance to feel equal to their classmates. It will give them the opportunity to enjoy school instead of worrying about being bullied.

bilby · 5 years ago

In some aspects this works but in other ways surely people would still buy
things such as expensive shoes and stationary.

sparrow223 · 5 years ago

My school banned designer coats and we had to wear thin coats even in the winter.

myotisis · 5 years ago

No. What if you just bought a new designer coat for Christmas and now you can't wear it? Forcing you to buy a new one won't help. Also, expensive coats are normally great quality, and keep you warm in the winter. The school should find a different way of making kids feel equal.

7diamond07 · 5 years ago

I think it is a bad idea because you shouldn’t stop people from wearing what they want.

elephant_m · 5 years ago

More fashionable or not, everyone is the same. If you want to wear it to school, why not? There's nothing stopping you!

isabelles8 · 5 years ago

Yes banning designer coats is a good idea because it can easily make poorer families feel ashamed or embarrassed.

violinem · 5 years ago

No because there are plenty of ways to make kids feel equal like making food prices cheaper. Also, if someone just got a new designer coat as the ban came then they wouldn't be able to wear it.

sabrewolf · 5 years ago

No, designer coats are expensive, the children’s parents bought them for their child because they love them and then people won’t let them wear the designer coats for 5-7 hours.

ch28 · 5 years ago

I don’t think it is a good way to Handel it because if your parents work hard for the money they should be able to spend it on what they want to spend it on

fridayfun9 · 5 years ago

I know the coats are expensive but people work hard for them create a school regulation coat

abinews · 5 years ago

I think it might be a good way, but the pupils that the ban was put into place for might get bullied as some unfair people might say that it was their fault

flossingg · 5 years ago

No, cos if they ban designer coats, what about the shoes, shirts, tights and skirts they wear every day? if they banned them if they were designer, they would have nothing to wear until their parents got them a new boring uniform! How unfair! comment #nofair if you agree

dwfangirl · 5 years ago

Yes. Some people will not have as much money as other people. Therefore, children may feel poor to see what others are wearing. Their parents might not be able to afford expensive designer coaster have to cut short on what they buy.
@DWFangirl

dwfangirl · 5 years ago

By the way, I meant to write " coats or" instead of "coaster".
@DWFangirl

aoifeh · 5 years ago

no we shodden have to band designer coats to make kid feel equal those kids who don't feel equal are geluse and they should think of all there nice coats.

fox64 · 5 years ago

I voted no but I also think yes because:

YES-it would make people feel like they can't afford anything high quality
NO-people should be allowed to wear what they want (within reason).

Plus, how can they check everyone's coat every day???

fly · 5 years ago

I don’t think they should be banned as some parents work really hard to buy their child a designer coat as that is what they are comfortable in
On the other hand kids should not be bullying others about they’re cloths specially if they have better

sophie.w · 5 years ago

NO some children really like their designer coats cos their parents work really hard to buy it for them and now they don'tget to wear it.

bobalob · 5 years ago

No, because it is not a very good excuse why children are bullied and parents or children will have saved up a lot of money to buy designer coats and if they don't get to wear them at school it will be cruel and a waste of money.

gwenrat · 5 years ago

No

ijm · 5 years ago

I think you shouldn't ban them because designer coats cost a lot of money and it would be a waste of parents' money if you had a designer coat and suddenly they got banned. Then you'd have to buy a new coat and it would be a waste of your parents' money. Also, some children would actually like wearing a normal coat instead of designer and don't feel bad about themselves for having a normal coat.

moosyb · 5 years ago

no i dont see the difference 2 be honest

ilovegoats · 5 years ago

Don't think it is a good idea to ban designer coats because it can make some people feel more secure when they were clothes that they think make them look prettier

lottielove · 5 years ago

I think yes it will make more kids feel equal but however, children should have a right to choose what kind of coat they wear (unless they have a coat which is in their school uniform) and adults have a right to choose what clothing they buy for their children. I put yes because it would make them feel more equal and that is what the question is asking but I don't think they should ban designer coats.

hcew · 4 years ago

It depends. If they are teasing others about the fact that they can't afford the expensive coat then that is another story. But if they are banning them if there has been no cases of poverty shaming at the school.

panda89 · 4 years ago

Yes I think it is.
Buuuuuuuuuuuuut I also think children should be able to wear what they want so they can express themselves. But equality comes first 🙂 👔

weirdcat · 3 years ago

It doesn't matter what you are wearing, as long as you are comfortable, happy with it, and not being laughed at/shamed.
