Should pencil cases be banned?

A SCHOOL in Northumberland is banning pencil cases to make sure everyone feels equal.

St Wilfrid’s Primary School wants to get rid of designer goods in the classroom, to ensure poorer pupils don’t feel different to their friends or get bullied.

The head teacher, Pauline Johnstone, explained that now “there’s no comparison on the tables and children are learning”. Instead of pupils bringing in their own pencil cases, the school is providing stationery and has introduced a standard backpack. They’ve also cut back on their fundraising and dress-down days, so that pupils don’t feel pressured to take part and donate money.

St Wilfrid’s is one of many schools involved in a project run by Children North East aimed at tackling poverty. The project is designed to stop poorer pupils being stigmatised (treated unfairly because you’re disapproved of).

Do you agree that with the pencil case ban?

NO! Parents will have spent money on these pencil cases for their kids, you cant just suddenly ban them!

darjap · 7 years ago

No. Pencil cases should not be banned because it contains equipment you use every day. I know poor children can't efford them, but does not mean other children can not use stationary for their work. To solve the problem of children being bullied because they don't have pencilcases, the school or teachers can provide stationary they need for the day (let then children borrow it).

titmouse · 7 years ago

Not necessary!

pandacool · 7 years ago

I think they should be banned because they are distracting and junk up the room.

czesio007 · 7 years ago

I don't think pencil cases should be banned because then your school won't have to pay for all the equipment and waste money for pencils, rubbers and rulers.

bobfm · 7 years ago

I think yes as so some children can not buy £10 pencil cases.

aim123 · 7 years ago

I think they shouldn't be banned because in free time at school if you want to colour you have everything you need.

sophia6 · 7 years ago

Yes because people could be feeling pressured that their pencil face isn't as fancy as their friends.

natalija · 7 years ago

I do not agree that pencil cases should be banned as they are good containers to hold stationery in. It is true that children should not buy flamboyant cases to show off, but small, humble pencil cases should be allowed.

unicorn248 · 7 years ago

NO because although i agree with the idea it's good for other children to get used to everybody having different things throughout life.

newsedit · 7 years ago

I don’t think this is required if people will treat each other fairly and realise that it IS only a pencil case

skate · 7 years ago

first!

mia-18 · 7 years ago

it is unfair that children have different things yes but if you ban everything none of us will be different nowadays all schools are talking about being different but you dont let us be different. I would give all the pupil premium students decent stationary and let the better off children have their own.

donutlove · 7 years ago

No because pencil cases are really nice to have and if you need a special type of pencil or pencil grip then you can just bring it in. I understand why banning them may be a good idea but in my school, people share stationery.

fantastict · 7 years ago

I say no. Without pencil cases, all of our tables will be messy and that schools need to pay to get ALL the stationery for the children.

I think banning pencil cases is a very good idea. Children then are not challenged by their friend's pencil case but by the work they are doing. Also, pupils who live in poverty or whom are young carers do not feel pressured to make sure they buy their own stationary when they might not be able to afford food - let alone a smiggle-scented pencil case!

Why would someone ban pencilcases? they are not harming anyone!!! :)

dcb10 · 7 years ago

I think no because it is something you take to school to be organised and also most teachers hate mess in classrooms, so if you didn't have pencil cases all your pens and pencils and other stationary would be scattered everywhere.

kiki36 · 7 years ago

How can you survive without a pencil case?

rshingy30 · 7 years ago

it's not necessary!!!

uglypigeon · 7 years ago

No- No one bullys in my class bcc of this, there’s no point in banning them bcc of that reason

purplefrog · 7 years ago

I think that pencil cases should be banned because if children who are less fortunate than others do get bullied, I think it would be a good way to stop that happening.

doctor2010 · 7 years ago

I think they should not be banned because some people have things they need that some schools do not provide.

explorer12 · 7 years ago

Yes, because it is important to feel equal and good about yourself.

rosyrhada · 7 years ago

No ! Pencil cases look cool.

rosyrhada · 7 years ago

Besides, there is nothing wrong with bringing in something that is designer.

swim4life · 7 years ago

I think pencilcases and designer items should be banned people shouldn't be able to show off in school about how rich they are

nib · 7 years ago

Well you could just make all children have the same pencil case such as all students must bring a black pencil case.

holholster · 7 years ago

I think that pencil cases should be banned in schools, because then nobody can be bullied from whether they have a cheap or expensive pencil pouch. For example, if a group of girls owned a Smiggle pencil case, which are very expensive, then the less fortunate children might feel bad about it.

daisy101 · 7 years ago

I said yes because lots of my stuff has gone missing also i fiddle with mine alot in class, it could help with my concentration.

spacewoman · 7 years ago

I don’t think pencil cases should be banned; how else would you take your stationery to school? If the pupils who have the less expensive pencil cases are treated unfairly, then sometihing should be done about that, not the pencil case problem.

sanjanak · 7 years ago

not really because even though I see their point of view, I'm sure most people who have pencil cases would share with others that don't when they need to use something .

itzzelz · 7 years ago

Children in my school used to chew pencils and it disgusting to use. Also if your not allowed to sharpen pencils during lessons, there might not have a pencil. If friends are kind, they can let people borrow there pencils

astro_girl · 7 years ago

I think no because they are a way of expressing yourself

koalalover · 7 years ago

I don't think they should as it is handy to have in class but I do think we could find another way to make it more equal.

shpee · 7 years ago

No. It's a stupid idea. How would you carry your stationary? And, if it's so that people 'don't get bullied' (who bullies someone over a pencil case though?) then why don't we ban backpacks and water bottles too? Because that would be stupid!

wren · 7 years ago

They're focusing on the wrong thing. Pencil cases aren't the issue here! Kids will find something to bully others about whatever - what needs addressing is discrimination.

catzrule19 · 7 years ago

I think pencil cases should be banned because that would make people stop stealing things and some peoples parents can't afford fancy stationary so some children fell left out.

xcurlysuex · 7 years ago

I think that pencil cases should be banned so then parents aren't pressured to spend loads of money on desighner pencil cases to avoid bullies. I don't think that the school would be wasting money either because every class has stationary anyway do they not? Mine certainly does.

molly2007 · 7 years ago

I think it should be banned so everyone is equal

molly2007 · 7 years ago

It is good that everyone is equal ?

rainbow07 · 7 years ago

I think that they should be banned because other less fortunate children will become upset and conscious about their own if they even have one.

bitzer · 7 years ago

I agree. I don’t think pencil cases should be band because the school wouldn’t have to pay for pencils and pens.

buddyboi · 7 years ago

No because pencil cases are a great place to store your stationary! I can see what they mean by poorer children feeling envy about the better pencils, rubbers, sharperners ect, though. My idea is that the school keep the ban, but hand out standard, black stationary to make sure no student feels left out and that everyone has the same.

melon_cow7 · 7 years ago

No. i l❤️Ve my stationary and I think it is really the only part of school that lets you express yourself. However, I see why they banned the pencil cases.

rosyrhada · 7 years ago

Pencil Cases are cooooool and I mean who dosent have £10 in there pocket?!!
Answer that Bobfn ! And you know missgalaxy that is like not buying your children sweets

sgadders · 7 years ago

At my school, they give you a pot which has everything that you will need for work (like pens, pencils, rulers, rubbers...). If people want then they can bring in pencil cases as well but the children without pencil cases (including me) will not be left out because we have the pots instead. I think that this has worked really well for my school and i think other schools should do that to if they think that people having to buy pencil cases for school is bad.

ballet2006 · 7 years ago

No, people have spent money on them .

gxlden · 7 years ago

No. Pencil cases should not be banned because it contains equipment you use every day. I know poor children can't efford them, but does not mean other children can not use stationary for their work. To solve the problem of children being bullied because they don't have pencilcases, the school or teachers can provide stationary they need for the day (let then children borrow it).

draco · 7 years ago

no because what if the school colours have run out 'cause everyone is using them??

synchro101 · 7 years ago

No!!!!! We should be able to use our own equipment

synchro101 · 7 years ago

??❤️

oceangirl5 · 7 years ago

Pencil cases help us express a sense of style and are really handy! I'd never give up my pencil case! Also pencil cases cost money and once they've been bought if they get banned it is a waster of money!

redpikachu · 7 years ago

No because pencil cases really aren't something you get bullied for. They should focus on things kids actually get bullied for like if they have a iPhone or not. Can't they just give out standard issue "uniform" pencil cases to kids who don't have them to carry their stationary around in and let the kids who have their own just bring their own?

10emoore · 7 years ago

It helps kids become more responsible because they are in charge of filling their own stationary.

ciarza123 · 7 years ago

Yes, because people loose things from their pencil cases and sometimes the actual pencil case but no aswell because some pencil cases are expensive and you can't say no if it's expensive.

rollersk8t · 7 years ago

Pencil cases should not be banned because it makes every body feel unique in a different way. But, so that people don't fiddle and get distracted by them, they should either promise to the teacher that they will not fiddle or get out a pencil from the pencil case from the tray before the lesson. (For primary school pupils.)

izzy_xxxxx · 7 years ago

Kids are going to find ways to make each other feel unequal; the only way to stop it is to make everyone identical, in clothes, shoes, speed, intelligence... And somehow, I don't think that will work. We should have a right to individuality.

bookcrazy1 · 7 years ago

I agree @mia-18! It's unfair both ways. But we have a right to express ourselves, so it's a big fat NOPE from me on a pencil-case ban.

fridayfun9 · 7 years ago

no because parents will have spent money on pencil cases and stationery

platinumfa · 7 years ago

No schools are missing a trick its cheaper because the school dousn't pay for it

samuel08 · 7 years ago

They have put a good point that some children may be poorer and not have as much money as other people have so i think they should ban it

YES

prongsii · 7 years ago

Why should we ban it? Theres no reason and besides, pencil cases also save money for schools cos they dont have to supply stuff for the students AND basically there is no point of getting rid of them. If someone is getting bullied cos of it, thats the bullies problem, not the pencil case. If someone doesnt have the same "equal" sort of pencil case, which is what these schools are trying to achieve, equality, then why not just dye everyones hair pink? Neutralise personalities and traits so that nobody can get jealous from another for being generally smart? Whats is this world doing?

1isme · 7 years ago

They are really handy

ninjanoah · 7 years ago

People need pencil cases to keep things organised

xdcoconut · 7 years ago

No because you store things in them like handwriting pens in our school rules too

wolfcrazy8 · 6 years ago

Pencil cases shouldn't be banned; they are pretty and are a handy way to store the stationery that you use every day. Also, what's stopping the children from sharing their stationery? It's not the pencil cases' fault that poorer children are getting bullied; it is the other children's discipline.

oceangirl · 6 years ago

No
Kids might have spent there money on there pencil cases like me

roseydog · 6 years ago

I think it should be band because you might loose it and you might have a really expensive pencil case that people might try to snach 'cos they are jelouse of it.

123kittens · 6 years ago

I think that this is a difficult one. Some people won't feel as if they fit in because of this which isn't fair but its also not fair to take away people's pencil cases which could have potentially cost them a lot of money.

gingerzulu · 6 years ago

I am not sure because if your family can't afford a pencil case or any of the stationery you may need, you might feel left out. As well as this, if the school provide the stationery then you wouldn't have to worry about bringing in the equipment you need on the right day (e.g. bringing a maths set when you have a maths test). However, some people prefer to use their own stationery then the schools, and they might find that theirs is more reliable.

munchiepun · 6 years ago

That would be ridiculous! You might as well ban school bags if you are going to do that!

sunglasses · 6 years ago

At my school, some people have Chanel, Ted Baker and even Gucci pencil cases (I doubt that this is the same at most schools) and no one bullies anyone else, and no one feels upset that they can't afford it. I think that if people are upset, they should just toughen up. I know it sounds harsh, but life is not about who has the best things.

rosiem · 6 years ago

No, as long as the children share their stuff around.

unidist · 6 years ago

I am stationary mad. no way! I lose all my pencils all the time!

rosiemeat · 6 years ago

I don't think that pencil cases should be banned but I think that there should be rules/guidelines about brands and makes.

melon_cow7 · 6 years ago

you wont lose your stuff if you have a pencil case

mavericke · 6 years ago

Definitely NO!

jedigeorge · 6 years ago

you can keep stationary in them NO!!!

lotussk8er · 6 years ago

I think burning them is a bit extreme. If someone is bullying you for not having a pencil case, you should tell a teacher!
