Would you be happy to get on a plane with no pilot on board?

Polls

16th August 2017

YOU’VE probably read or heard about plans to have driverless cars, but how about planes without pilots?

That’s what was being discussed this week, after research by a bank called UBS said that pilotless planes could save airlines more than £25bn a year.

That’s because it’s expensive to train and pay pilots, and computers could fly more efficiently, saving money on fuel.

Although planes have been using computers to take off, land and fly on autopilot for years, many experts feel that planes still need pilots in case something goes wrong.

UBS surveyed more than 8,000 people, and more than half said they probably wouldn’t get on a plane with no pilot. It’s possible that cargo planes could be the first to go pilotless.

Vote in our poll to tell us what you think!

Would you be happy to get on a plane with no pilot on board?

No!! Robots and machines do malfunction, like cash machines at Sainsbury's?
Unfortunately, it could crash and end people's lives. Pilot's are WAY better than machines or robots who could drive planes, because, although machines are 'trained', pilot's have so much more experience.
Therefore, I really do not think that we should have 'driverless planes'!

I wouldnt like to have no pilot on board because the plane might crash and passengers could have an injury or be killed.

banjoblaze · 7 years ago

This one was difficult, but I had to go with no. This is because I'm incredibly nervous on planes already and, as happy4456 said, robots do malfunction. Also, some passengers feel reassured by live messages from the pilot. They should test these out for as long as possible with no passengers on board, and find the most effective robot.

akurapaty · 7 years ago

Definitely not. What if something goes wrong and the plane crashes??

oceangirl · 7 years ago

We are turning into an internet-relying county here people! No I would not go on a plane without a pilot

radishes10 · 7 years ago

No-I wouldn't feel safe. We can't always trust robots (or whatever it is) to go perfectly, they can always malfunction and we can't predict when it will happen! We should stop believing we can always rely on machines to do our work, and also we are robbing pilots of their jobs, which is unfair

popchip4 · 7 years ago

happy4456 i totally agree!!!
i wouldnt feel safe without a pilot because machines are unreliable

catonclan · 7 years ago

It would put my dad out of a Job

emango · 7 years ago

Someone could reprogram a robot crash the plane, or the robot could malfunction! Also, if the plane crashed in water, the robot would not be able to help. People have died in driverless cars recenty so I am DEFINATELY not getting in a driverless plane!

Disha1234 · 7 years ago

Machines malfunction so there should be a pilot there to help if anything goes wrong.

girlywirly · 7 years ago

NO! Because robots may break and how would you land and take off. Robots may make the plane hit another plane, you never know.

b0belle · 7 years ago

Of course it's a no! Loads of people dislike flying because they don't enjoy having someone other than them in control. Imagine how they would feel if a ROBOT was deciding everything?
The truth is, the human race has become FAR too dependent on technology for little things, but allowing them to have complete rule over what happens to us is just taking it too far.

sophette · 7 years ago

No way! If the plane crashes then robots won't tell you what to do to be safe. Also, robots and machines go rong a lot more that real pilots!

nbeausang · 7 years ago

If u were in a situation where the plane was about to crash if there was a pilot there they would be able to prevent the crash however if it was driverless it might keep going and kill all the people on board

magnus1234 · 7 years ago

Too Much automation will cause catastrophic and unnecessary accidents.

Sashgirl06 · 7 years ago

Definitely not!!! I know that machines are programmed to do stuff, but even programmed machines get things wrong sometimes. Because the plane would be set to fly a certain route, if it veered off course, or was about to crash, the machine wouldn't know what was going on, so it would just keep going, whereas a trained pilot would use his/her instincts to steer out of trouble. We're much safer with pilots. And, besides, thousands of jobs would be abolished.

Umbrella4 · 7 years ago

NO!!! If there was no one in control of the plane and there was a unsuspected storm what is the plane to do drive (I don't know if this is the right word!) right through the storm cloud? I would feel very unsafe knowing that there was no Pilot driving my plane...

joshops · 7 years ago

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That must be amazing but super dangerous

007Dan · 7 years ago

No because people would lose their jobs and I would like to be a pilot too. Also, robots can malfunction so people would also lose their lives.

CatLover01 · 7 years ago

Definitely not!! What if something went wrong? It's not like the passengers can deal with it!

RockyTabbs · 7 years ago

This poll is showing someone how selfish they are.

RockyTabbs · 7 years ago

Happy4456, We support your comment

shpee · 7 years ago

I'm scared enough about plane crashes already. So, no. I definitely wouldn't trust a robot. I don't really like the idea of driverless vehicles anyway.

chrischros · 7 years ago

It's like having a campfire where a robot does everything. It's like putting your life in a robot's hands, which I am certainly not comfy with

areosquid · 7 years ago

only if i knew how to fly it outher wise
HEEELLL NOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yellowman7 · 7 years ago

I agree with happy4456 machines can malfunction

prongsii · 7 years ago

SERIOUSLY GUYS! YES it WOULD be cool, but couldnt these BRAINY INVENTORS AND ALL keep it to them selves and just not USE them! COS SERIOUSLY, THIS WORLD RUNS JUST FINE WITHOUT NONSENSE WHICH PUTS POOR PEOPLE OUT OF HAVING JOBS SO GET A GRIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3v0charl · 7 years ago

It would be sooooo risky
Ahhhhhh

owly · 7 years ago

No. If a plane crashes, the pilot is to blame, and they would be put out of the job. If it's a robot, who's to blame and get a punishment???

lollypop · 7 years ago

I personally think it would be very cool to be told that your plane had no driver ! But also a bit scary because the computer controlling it could malfunction and then there would be no hope of surviving.
So I conclusion I think i'd prefer to have a proper driver because in my opinion that would be much safer.

lollypop · 7 years ago

lol

mashabludn · 7 years ago

THE PILOT AND CO-PILOT COULD FALL ASLEEP!!!

radishes10 · 7 years ago

robots can't always be programmed for every possible senario so they might not know what to do in a certain situation, but humans can just use simple common sense to work out what to do whatever happens.?✈️?? ????✈️??

dorito · 7 years ago

I wouldn't feel safe when there's no person involved to overcome any electronic failures

dorito · 7 years ago

We need pilots! My brother wants to be one when he's older! He needs a job so he can get out of my way!

banjoblaze · 7 years ago

Driverless planes would obviously have catastrophic consequences. Pilots and co-pilots would lose their jobs, people would become even more nervous and other staff might feel more under pressure, being in charge. Likely there would be a lot more crashes and we are too relying on technology.

Magic10 · 7 years ago

Not exactly. Right now, we're just not advanced enough to keep it safe. I mean, driverless cars still crash quite a lot.

matilda1 · 7 years ago

i said yes i am brave

stefano · 7 years ago

obviously no

masterkash · 7 years ago

Machines are less reliable than humans

foodiegirl · 7 years ago

Dunno ?‍♀️ plus u need someone to make decisions if it goes wrong

bruh12345 · 7 years ago

No. The computer could malfunction and crash!
It also takes away pilot's jobs therefore disturbance for the family and all that hassle to try find another job.
Anything could go wrong with a computer so there you have it a definite NO!

i_care · 7 years ago

Over 90% of plane crashes happen when the pilot blanks out. If it was robotically controlled, less accidents.

kawaii101 · 7 years ago

I agree with Happy4456

kawaii101 · 7 years ago

Plus, pilots are wayyyyy more reliable because they have a bit more control over the plane and it would be very risky because you never know what might happen

puppy20 · 7 years ago

Definetely not! I like to feel safe on planes and without a pilot if something happens no one can do anything about it!

snowleopar · 7 years ago

There should be ato pilot planes but as well as a pilot standing by to make sure nothing goes wrong

sunglasses · 7 years ago

Machinery can easily break down or malfunction. If we were to get onto driverless planes, I think everyone would feel much safer if there was a pilot on board in case anything went wrong.

velcipanda · 7 years ago

yes. because they would not let pilotless planes go ahead if they weren't 100% sure that it is safe. happy4456 you said it was like the cash machines at sainsburys but if they malfunction people wont die, so pilotless planes probably have extra safety in place. Also there probably would be lots of people, like flight attendants, on hand to take over if anything goes wrong

fluffy14 · 7 years ago

NO!
What would happen when the robots had a failure or something
there would be no-one to continue the journey

Leeandari · 7 years ago

No!! It's creepy!!

orangebob9 · 7 years ago

I would not be comfortable especially as I do NOT know how to drive a plane plus who would drive it???

fox64 · 7 years ago

NO.

ninjahari · 7 years ago

OMG NOOOOOOOOOOOO OF COURSE!!!

10d · 7 years ago

My gosh no I would not. reason it could crash

emperor · 7 years ago

Who wants to die a scary young and cruel death? Who wants to get on a pilotless plane?

These are basically the same questions. Robots are easily hacked. Say the President or the PM was on a pilotless plane, chances are they would be killed by a hacker who disagrees with their policies. However awful and upsetting their policies might be (Mexican wall etc.) these people don't deserve a death like this. Also many innocent people would die on these planes. Yes, there would be no human error. No, actually, there would. I wonder if these 'oh so clever' scientists thought, 'oh, there would be human error. After all, humans have to program and build the robots!'
Nope. They don't think of that.
AI is progressing way too fast ???

mia-18 · 7 years ago

i would never go on board without a pilot there they can still malfunction and people think they can rely on any machine

i would just find it scary

1isme · 7 years ago

Planes are mostly operated by compiuters anyway except in take-off and landing, so it won't make any difference. People say I trust compiuters to much.

endodragon · 7 years ago

i don't want the plane to malfunction and crash.

emerald123 · 7 years ago

Machines can malfunction. It seems pretty dangerous ?

epicboy@11 · 7 years ago

It'd seem way too dangerous, and I'd prefer to have a human steering

ZENCE40 · 7 years ago

WOW! That is a crazy, unsafe idea!

ernie4545 · 7 years ago

I worry enough about getting a plane anyway I don't want to find out that the machine went wrong and its difficult to fix

Shreybu · 7 years ago

I think that if there are those planes, there should be a pilot there just in case something goes wrong. I wouldn't feel very safe if there was no pilot. I probably wouldn't want to be on that plane at all.

Teddyowner · 7 years ago

No way!!!!!!!!!!!

izzy_xxxxx · 7 years ago

To be honest, I don't feel safe getting onto a plane anyway. People make the wrong decisions, machines malfunction. What do yoy trust more? You have more chance of being struck by lightning than being involved in a plane crash. Plus, car crashes are much nore regular, and deadly, and how many times have you been worried before getting into your car? Moreover, we are EXTREMELY reliant on technology in our daily lives, and are becoming increasingly lazy. It would put many people out of a job, and many lives at risk for.....less cost! All worth it then! ??

tdn · 7 years ago

no because it run out of fuel

zeushades8 · 7 years ago

If it wAz safe then yeah

charlton07 · 6 years ago

As much as I like going on planes, I would not trust it. It would be fine if I were to go to Scotland, but transatlantic flights, no way...

1isme · 6 years ago

Our planes are already mostly operated by computers anyway so why not?

kgrewal · 6 years ago

What if the plane starts to malfunction and breaks down?

RoseBun · 6 years ago

I put no but if it had been protected and checked maybe.

kestj003.3 · 6 years ago

YES I WOULD SINCE I TRUST INVENTORS TO DO EVERYTHING RIGHT BUT IT WOULD BE KNDA CREEPY IF SOMETHING WENT WRONG OR THE COMPUTER MAILFUNCTIONED

lilpenguin · 6 years ago

NO! I don't think it would be safe.

holholster · 6 years ago

No chance would I get on a plane with no pilot!!! I mean, if something went wrong, and you were in the air with no trained professionals, what would you be expected to do?!

nostrils · 6 years ago

GOD NO! I wouldn't fit unless their was a trained pilot, they are have the responsibility of keeping many people alive and safe.

ti-10 · 6 years ago

If there is no pilot on the plane... HOW IS THE PLANE EVEN GOING TO STAY UPRIGHT! The plane will probably just dip down and crash on some random island that no one even knows about approximately in 5.3 seconds, at least I think that will happen?

123kittens · 6 years ago

catonclan- I'm a bit late ; ) but it would put my dad out of a job too! Believe that people are becoming to reliant on things that aren't particularly realistic.

I AGREE WITH EMPEROR

katkid10 · 3 years ago

I would be scared - probably because I've never been on a plane - but I would be Ok if there was an autopilot, but still a normal pilot just in case of a bit accident or something.
