Labour wins the general election

After volunteers stayed up all night counting people’s votes, the results of the general election show that the Labour Party has won and that Sir Keir Starmer will be the new prime minister.

Although current PM Rishi Sunak held on to his seat, lots of big names in the Conservative Party have lost theirs, including Defence Secretary Grant Shapps, Jacob Rees-Mogg and Penny Mordaunt, who not too long ago was being tipped as future leader.

“There is much to learn… and I take responsibility for the loss, ” said Mr Sunak. “I am sorry.”

The results will be coming in for the rest of the day, but Labour has passed the mark of 326 seats that it needed for an overall majority of MPs in Parliament, which means it has overall control and can pass laws easily.

“Change begins now,” said Mr Starmer. “It feels good, I have to be honest.”

It’s the first time since 2010 that the Conservative Party hasn’t been in charge of the country, and now it’s Labour’s turn again.

The Liberal Democrats have also made huge gains, taking lots of seats from the Conservatives, and the Scottish National Party was looking to have had a terrible night and has lost a lot of seats to Labour.

Another big story from the night is that Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has finally become an MP after eight attempts, winning Clacton with a majority of 8,405.
