Ed Sheeran’s US tour has been hit by controversy after rapper Macklemore was dropped from the line-up and all the other support acts quit.

Macklemore was removed from the tour by promoters after he made remarks about the conflict between Israel and Palestine during two concerts in New Jersey. The American star called for a “free Palestine” and showed images of devastation in Gaza.

Some venues didn’t like the political remarks and said they wouldn’t let Macklemore perform. Sheeran’s other support acts then decided to quit the tour to show their support for Macklemore and free speech. Sheeran himself said he chooses not to comment publicly on situations like Gaza, and insisted he would continue performing. This caused upset among many fans, and ticket sales have fallen for the remaining US leg of his Loop Tour.

At his first solo concert since the events, Ed addressed the situation, saying: “I’ve had to take and make difficult decisions – and I am making mistakes – and I’m so, so sorry.” He added that he was working out how he can help the “victims of these terrible times” both in Israel and Gaza.

An emotional Ed ended his speech by saying his concert was “still a place where everyone is welcome, and everyone here can stand beside people who have opposing views”.
