A new survey has revealed that potatoes are the true must-have of the Christmas dinner.
While many families ditch turkey or swap sprouts for peas, more than two-thirds of Britons refuse to give up roast potatoes, and a third will also serve mash. That puts potatoes ahead of other festive essentials such as turkey (63%), gravy (52%) and pigs in blankets (48%).
Potatoes have been part of UK festive meals since Victorian times, and around 250 million are eaten each Christmas. Experts say the right variety – such as Maris Piper or King Edward – is key for perfect crispy roasties.
