BRITISH manufacturing is facing a major crisis, as young people aren’t being trained in the right skills for the job.

Manufacturing is all about making products with the help of equipment, machines, tools and workers. Lots of things are manufactured, but some of the most important things are cars, clothes, computers and electrical equipment. A new report by WorldSkills UK has found that young people aren’t being taught about manufacturing or how to get a job in it.

A further 60% said they wouldn’t even consider a career in it. Employers aren’t helping matters though, with the findings showing that more than half aren’t helping young people to gain the right skills and 41% admitting they aren’t doing anything to attract young people into the industry.

There are a huge number of skilled jobs that are “hard to fill” right now so WorldSkills UK is calling for businesses, schools and the Government to take action, before the industry starts to struggle.

I do not think school is preparing me for real life jobs, because they do not teach skills that you would use in later life. Sure, there are subjects such as Maths and English which are essential, but I don't think they would be as effective like sunjects such as Engineering and Cooking.

I am only in primary school so all we are taught is the basics which come up in all jobs.
I also feel that our jobs are our choice that we should develop overtime.

For me they are because I want to be an author. But people have different dream job's. Someone in my class want's to become an interior designer and school is not preparing them for that. So I would say 50/50.

Me: How do we pay taxes? How do I get a job? How do I buy a house? Schools: The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.

I want to be a CEO when I grow up and my school is definitely not preparing me for the CEO job.

Kind of, but it is improving your knowledge. Some jobs aren't involved at school.

My school is definitely doing a good job of preparing pupils for jobs. Our curriculum is varied, with a big DT room where we can do woodwork, as well as a variety of academic topics. We also have 5 school ‘Skills for the Future’ - critical thinking, creativity, compassion collaboration, and communication - which are woven in the curriculum, helping to prepare us with essential skills for later life.

In our PSHCE lessons, we are learning lots about money management and getting jobs, which will really help when we’re older.

In my school we start thinking about getting jobs in year 5 (9-10 yrs) and they go through all the possibilities and encourage you to do what you want to do.
