Is Santa Claus a man’s role?

A ROW has been going on in Newton Aycliffe in County Durham about whether a woman could play Santa Claus in this year’s Christmas parade.
It’s that time of year again when lots of people are dressing up as Father Christmas for charity events, plays and parades all over the world – but should Santa Claus always be a male role? Great Aycliffe Town Council says yes, after putting the issue to a vote.
The argument began after a woman from Newton Aycliffe offered to take on the role of Father Christmas in the town’s Santa Claus charity parade.
But, one of the town’s councillors argued against women performing as Father Christmas in the parade. The councillor told The Times newspaper: “I have no issue with a Mrs Claus. But Santa Claus being a man is a longheld tradition accepted by the vast majority of society.”
Great Aycliffe Town Council’s Recreation Committee decided to vote on whether or not the traditionally male role should be made available to women. Councillors voted against the idea last Wednesday and released this statement: “The Recreation Committee confirmed by resolution that the role of Santa Claus should continue to be a male role.”
News of the vote has since hit newspapers and social media and became a nationwide gender debate, with some people arguing that men or women should be able to act as Santa Claus at official events.
What do you think?

I don't think it should be for women since Santa (the original) who is actually St Nicholas was a man. I think it should stay that way forever.
Mog18 · 6 years ago
NO it is not! I see no problem with a female Santa Claus! Although the history of Santa Claus (He/She used to be a bishop, so the history may have to be a bit altered to fit more Victorian or other old times.) But other than that I do not see any problem, most children like myself wont be that bothered about the history anyway. By the way, bishops wear red so Coke did NOT create Santa's outfit.

I think that it is not fair on women to not be Santa. This is feminist because all women should have the same opportunities as men.
dwfangirl · 6 years ago
I think that it is not a man's role because it can be a woman as they are just as good at delivering presents as men. Besides, some are so much more organised than men that the female santa would probably do the job faster! @DWFangirl
elephant_1 · 6 years ago
I don't think women should take on the role as Santa because traditionally Santa is a male.By doing this we would be changing history which doesn't feel right.Santa has a beard as well which would make it harder for women to dress up as Santa
zerotooth · 6 years ago
Yes because it is father Christmas not mother Christmas and they call him St Nicholas not St Nicola!
elephant_m · 6 years ago
Yes, because Santa Claus is also called Father Christmas and was in history called St Nicholas. It would be wrong for a woman to upset the traditions of Christmas but dressing up as Santa.
pavarti · 6 years ago
yes because things like santa and other role models are men and women need a bigger voice in the world!
fluffyboi · 6 years ago
I do not think that women should play the part as santa, as it is not the tradition, however, I think that they have the right to play as Mrs. Claus and stick to the tradition.
ad72_456 · 6 years ago
I don't think it matters because people haven't met Santa Claus so they have the right to imagine him/her in any way they feel, away from the Santa is a man stereotype.
progamer · 6 years ago
o thimk it can be a female role as women are equal to men
splogey123 · 6 years ago
i think santa is a man
ch28 · 6 years ago
Well I think it should not be known as a man but it is a tradition so it should stay the same
15rcarterr · 6 years ago
Women should not be singled out from playing Santa because men and women are equal.
It is not acceptable that women are singled out from playing some parts.
j100p · 6 years ago
I think that women should be allowed to dress up, because there can be both male and female people doing the same job, so why can't both do this?
heh · 6 years ago
Santa was originally a man, so you shouldn’t really change it like that.
hockey.xx · 6 years ago
There may be Mrs Claus and Santa Claus but you could call Santa a woman to not include the argument of sexism.
dachshund7 · 6 years ago
I agree that not everything is for a certain gender but it doesn’t mean that we have to change traditions like Saint Nicholas ? just because of equality ,it doesn’t mean traditions have to change.

Santa is a man's role because it is Father Christmas, not Mother Christmas.

Yes,because otherwise people won't believe In Santa because they normally see that Santa is a boy.
artymartin · 6 years ago
Well I think yes because Santa Claus sounds like a mans role but a women can do it as well. It’s just more of me is saying yes than no. But Santa Claus is married to Mrs Claus remember.
marla_cat · 6 years ago
I don't know because women are always playing men and vice cersa in pantomimes and stuff like that so that could happen again. and the idea that mrs. claus just sews santas stuff and is basically his servant changing that to be more feminine would be good. but the character that was invented way back has always been male, so i honestly dont know
marla_cat · 6 years ago
its stupid that an arguement was caused just because a women was offered the job as santa.
kitten888 · 6 years ago
I think It should, as Men and women are equal and can do/have any job that they want!
wedmore · 6 years ago
NO, it is not! I cannot see any problem with a female Santa. Although the history of Santa Claus was St Nicholas as a man, women are also suitable for the job. But other than that I do not see any problem, most children like myself won't be that bothered about the history anyway.
gameknight · 6 years ago
I agree when some say the original St Nicholas but it's okay if we pretend that Mrs Claus tried the job for a year!
fridayfun9 · 6 years ago
Recently people have been debating about equal pay and gender equality and when I saw this I was like of course a woman can play Santa Claus it would be like putting a modern twist on the traditional tale. You could change it from st Nicholas to st Nicola
polarbear4 · 6 years ago
No because we have never found out and people have just presumed that he/she is a man and did not think about it. Just because St Nicholas is a man DOESN'T mean it has to stay that way because i think it's being mean to girls for the boys to be the people who give out present and everybody to be thankful to them and not women.

I don't think that it should be for women. I understand about sexism, however, this is just taking it a step too far. Traditions should stay the same.
shardaneha · 6 years ago
I think Santa's role should be given to anyone, as ladies need to do equal things that men do.
feverdt · 6 years ago
Yes as who Santa is (St. Nicholas) was a man and has been for around 2,000 years. Therefore I see it as a man's roll
hc-524219 · 6 years ago
No! I don’t think Santa Claus is a man’s role since Santa is actually supposed to spread joy around the world and I see no difference of a woman trying to spread happiness to kids even though St Nicholas was a man.
joshlapp07 · 6 years ago
No,because...just because!

I have no problem with Father Christmas being a lady as long as it is advertised as Mother Christmas.
doomboomfp · 6 years ago
I mean Father Christmas (Father) clue in the name.
greengoat · 6 years ago
I believe in equality, but Santa has always traditionally been a man. Instead women could dress up as Mrs Claus.
ac20 · 6 years ago
Santa is definitely a man, he always has been!
scrooge383 · 6 years ago
santa can be female
izzie99 · 6 years ago
These days ‘ gender equality’ is much talked about but really, some people think the same things they did one hundred years ago. If a man who was bad at singing and a woman who fitted the part perfectly, even if the role was for a man, why can’t the woman have a chance? She might be amazing! So I say NO!
crazyslime · 6 years ago
I think Santa Claus is a man because when we were little we got told Santa has a long and white beard and a curly moustache. Now we can’t imagine santa being a woman without manly features! Santa Claus being a man is stuck in heads of millions of children all around the world and no one can change that. If you ask a child to describe Santa Claus they will always describe him as a man.???
jhm3654 · 6 years ago
I think that the original Father Christmas should stay as it has been like that for hundreds of years and if the change it now it may upset children!

shpee · 6 years ago
Well it is Father Christmas and the origin of Sinterklaas (where we got the name Santa Claus from) is based on Saint Nicholas so it is really a man's role, though it doesn't really matter that much. I just find it to be an odd decision to make him a woman when every other portrayal I can think of has had Father Christmas being a man.
yath-yath · 6 years ago
Santa should be played by a man because Santa Claus was originally portrayed as a man. If it was portrayed by a female it would be Mary Christmas not Santa Claus anymore!

I understand that we are trying to be politically correct because it is 2018, but some roles have to be defined by gender (like Father Christmas)
abinews · 6 years ago
I don't really know. I'm in two minds as I really want women to be able to do all that men can do (within reason). But then again, I hate change and I've grown up with Santa being a man.
I definitely wouldn't mind seeing a mother Christmas in a Christmas display.
louis14 · 6 years ago
No it doesn't have to because girls and boys are all human beings but they would have to change it to mother Christmas, still girls can do it if they want it's fair

I think that Santa Claus can be female, as men dress up as women in pantomimes, so why should it be any different to that?
Otherwise, it is just sexist
xo.katiek · 6 years ago
No, because men have always been Santa but if it were to change I think women would finally feel more equal than they are now. I wouldn't care who was playing Santa in a play.
poppypapa · 6 years ago
How ridiculous. The original Santa was a male but females have the right to be Santa if they want. Don't they??
herbology · 6 years ago
I know it's sort of sexist not letting a woman play santa, but it sort of has been a tradition that santa is a man. I mean, it's always been like that!! ???Merry Christmas everyone!!!
sloth2008 · 6 years ago
Personally, I think that Santa is a man's role because he is always known to be a man. Otherwise, if a woman is it, it might be a bit confusing.
avaturner · 6 years ago
father Christmas might be a girl, but I put on the poll that santa is a woman

I think he is a man because he is sorta based of God/Jesus but it’s intresting to think he could be a girl

I have a problem with female Santa clauses because that is Mrs clause so you can’t call a female Santa.

No!!! Definately not!!! Santa or FATHER Christmas has been a male for centuries, and we can't change it now...it would spoil the traditions of Christmas:)

chotspot · 6 years ago
I think it is a mans role because Santa's name is actually Nicholas but the only bad thing about it is that it is a bit sexist
tiger6 · 6 years ago
I don't have any problems with women being Santa, its just that Santa is traditionally a man and I just think it's kind of like debating over should the front cover for a magazine designed for women be a male or a female.
chahou · 6 years ago
We are trying to be politically correct but, all that we are doing loses the meaning sometimes. FATHER Christmas is old so we need to keep it that way.
izzyleaf · 6 years ago
I think that Santa could be a woman otherwise that would be unfair. Why shouldn’t women get a chance to take on this role?
snubby26 · 6 years ago
I think Santa should be played by a man because it has been a tradition for a long time.
flossingg · 6 years ago
it can be either
hagrid · 6 years ago
I think people who say Santa has to be played by a man are being a bit mean because think about the pantomimes, there's almost always a man playing a woman in a pantomime so why can't a woman play a man?
hagrid · 6 years ago
Women are equal to men so if men can play women, women can play men and anything a man can do a woman can do as well.
crazyfish6 · 6 years ago
No. You see so many people worrying about things like sexism nowadays and yet still we do tolerate a women trying to bring a little bit of happiness to the world. It is outrageous that people are now calling snowmen snow people, yet they can't let a woman do "a man's job". You see woman dressed as santa doing santa runs, what's the difference?
aoifeh · 6 years ago
it could be a girl who is Santa because mr Claus and miss clause. it might be that mr Claus is the won siting dow doing nothing and miss Claus doing all mr Claus's work.
natalija · 6 years ago
I think that Santa should be a man because he was one originally and that must have been for a reason. Also St Nicholas was a man and he was the 'santa'.
oceangirl · 6 years ago
I believe it can be any. Because eve. Though it is called MR. Claus, it is not breaking the law.
darth_bob · 6 years ago
Mog18, Coca Cola did dress Santa in red and he used to be green. I think that Santa should be a man's role. I am all for gender equality but Santa is historically a man's role and Santa should stay the same for the next generations so that they can experience the same joy that we have.
huddlest · 6 years ago
No, it not. Don't be sexist.

There is nothing wrong in having a female Santa Claus and it is time we change this.
kina36 · 6 years ago
It doesn't matter what gender Santa. If you say it is a problem then that basically means you are trying to say women aren't good enough.
22well · 6 years ago
I think that it can be both
zarla_101 · 6 years ago
Wow, this one looks close!
I know in the time that Santa Claus was 'invented', people believed that men were better than women, and I agree that is sexist.
But the original St Nicholas was a male because biologically, men are but stronger, and St Nick needed to be strong because he had to carry lots of presents (his original role was to give out food and gifts to the poor on 25 dec). But women not hose days played important roles too. For example, st Nick's wife would make the food that he would deliver, and sew toys for the poor children. She was very important too.
And, yes, in 2018, women would be capable of doing Santa's job, but here is my point: Santa was made a man. It's tradition that he is a man, and although women are awesome and very important, there are some things you just can't change. Mrs Claus is also important, and so are many other female figures today, it let Santa be a guy. It's how he is.
mimmygirl · 6 years ago
Everyone should have a chance to be Santa and not be told no just because they are female.
bubble33 · 6 years ago
It is not sexist to say that santa is a man, it is tradition. I have no problem with a Mrs Claus but santa is a man. ?
