Do you recycle all of your plastics?

16th June 2017

At a United Nations (UN) oceans conference in New York, the Asian countries of China, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines promised
to do more to prevent plastics ending up in the world’s oceans.

Plastic is non-biodegradable, which means it cannot break down. It’s thought that more than eight million tonnes of plastic end up in the world’s oceans every year. More than half of it is from five nations: China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. A lot of the plastic in the world’s waters is accidentally swallowed by birds and fish.

Over the last ten years we have produced more plastic than during the whole of the last century – and we produce more than 200 million tonnes of plastic every single year. Scientists reckon 75% of the plastic in the world’s seas flows from just ten rivers, most of which are in Asia. In Thailand, around 2.8 million tonnes of rubbish ended up in the sea in 2016, and 12% of that was plastic. The Thai government says it is taking action, including encouraging more environmentally-friendly packaging. The Indonesian government has announced a new scheme to teach schoolchildren about pollution.

The UN’s environment executive director, Erik Solheim, told the BBC that “there are quite encouraging signs, with nations taking the ocean much more seriously”. But he also warned that “there is a very long way to go.”

I do tell a lot of teenagers not to litter but they just don't care!!!

shpee · 7 years ago

Not all of it. There are plastics that can't be recycled and even if the local council accept the, they'll be sent to an energy recovery facility I think. But I do recycle any that I can!

dotmatilda · 7 years ago

We do try to whenever possible. Empty yogurt pots and other things like that we just wash up beforehand.

I don't recycle all my plastics because some of them can't be recycled

radishes10 · 7 years ago

Yes, I reckon I do, however it upsets me that a lot of public places don't actually have recycling bins, which means that people are less encouraged to recycle.♻️✔️, ?(is that a bin emoji?)

girlywirly · 7 years ago

We very often try to recycle all our plastic bottles and items. We quite often re-use plastic bottles.

banjoblaze · 7 years ago

Yes, I do recycle plastics, unless its something I'm keeping. Better it's made into something new than sent to landfill.

rebecca.xo · 7 years ago

tanderichardson · 7 years ago

My family have only just started recycling all of our plastics and my mum is loving it!! I think that it is great for all of the wildlife that get trapped/ killed in all of the plastic waste. This way it is easier for all of us and it gets disposed of properly rather than people tossing it into the sea and killing or badly injuring all of the sea life living there.

Not everything can be recycled, but we Recycle all we can.

amynatalie · 7 years ago

We recycle our plastics and most other things that can be recycled but sometimes it is hard because there might not be a recycle bin close by.

I am very aware of pollution and global warming and stuff like that. I think scientists should work harder to work out a way to be able to recycle everything. After all, every day global warming is getting worse, and unless someone comes up with a genius idea sometime soon, looks like 'goodbye earth, hello mars' Why should animals die because of humans littering our planet? I mean, imagine it was animals had evolved to such extreme mesures like humans? What then? I expect we would live like them, unable to communicate. However, I don't think that we would have to worry about pollution as I think animals would have thought about the consequences before they did the bad stuff we have done.

My family always recycles every plastic or cardboard we have always is in the recycling bin. I hate seeing rubbish outside, it annoys me so much. Seeing the animals picking them up and trying to eat the rubbish, it's disgusting. Sometimes I keep some of the recycling and make different things out of them.

I think that recycling is the action which could save all the innocent ocean creatures regularily caught in the debris in the sea. plastic is highly dangerouse for them because the creatures could get stuck in plastic ,eat plastic or even be drowned because of it. I also believe that schools should have recycling more in the curriculum to make children more aware of the animals killed. If no action is done ,soon ,then the sea creatures will die out ,and humans will be the cause for this.
